Peru: Strong earthquake shakes southern Andes

Powerful Earthquake Jolts Peru’s Southern Andes; No Casualties Reported

A potent earthquake struck the southern Andes region of Peru on Thursday, rattling residents and prompting emergency evacuations across several mountainous provinces. While initial magnitude estimates varied between international and local agencies, authorities have confirmed that the region has largely avoided significant casualties or structural collapse.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) registered the quake at a magnitude of 6.7, while Peru’s own Geophysical Institute (IGP) placed the intensity at 7.2. The tremor occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT). According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 38 kilometers (24 miles) northwest of Upahuacho, in the Ayacucho region, at a depth of 66.7 kilometers. The IGP, utilizing local sensors, estimated the focal depth at 108 kilometers.

Swift Response and Minimal Damage

Despite the intensity of the shaking, there have been no immediate reports of deaths or injuries. The Peruvian Navy was quick to issue a statement confirming that there was no threat of a tsunami, providing significant relief to coastal communities.

"The population has responded, they evacuated and took shelter," Coracora Mayor Yony Odon told local media. Coracora, home to roughly 10,000 residents, is the largest town near the epicenter. Images circulating on social media and broadcast by national news outlets showed debris, including rocks and earth, tumbling down hillsides near the town, but local infrastructure appears to have held up against the tremors.

Luis Vasquez, head of Civil Defense, confirmed the positive outlook, stating to the RPP radio station that "no damage of any kind has been reported so far." The tremors were felt across a vast stretch of southern Peru, with residents in the regions of Ica and Arequipa reporting moderate to strong shaking. Even in the capital, Lima, far to the north, some residents reported feeling the sway of the earth.

A Region Prone to Seismic Activity

The event serves as a stark reminder of the geological fragility of the region. Peru is situated along the southeastern edge of the Pacific earthquake-prone "Ring of Fire", a highly active tectonic belt that encompasses much of the Pacific coast.

Due to its location, the country frequently experiences seismic events of varying intensities. While modern building codes and public awareness campaigns have mitigated the impact of many recent quakes, the memory of past disasters remains vivid. In 2007, a devastating magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck the Ica region, resulting in nearly 600 fatalities and widespread destruction.

As emergency crews continue to survey the mountainous terrain near Ayacucho, the government has urged residents to remain vigilant and follow official civil defense guidelines in the event of aftershocks.
