NEW DELHI: Rishabh Pant, the dynamic Indian wicketkeeper-batter, once again proved his knack for entertaining fans, though this time his captivating performance came not from his bat, but from an unexpected display of footwork. During India’s recent warm-up game against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo, Pant was seen showcasing his football skills while batting in the second innings, creating a viral moment that quickly resonated across social media platforms.

In a peculiar yet amusing turn of events, Pant opted to use his feet to deflect deliveries that were bowled wide, rather than employing his bat. This unconventional approach to dealing with out-of-reach balls instantly grabbed attention, with clips of his playful act being widely circulated and garnering significant buzz among cricket enthusiasts online.

Pant Takes 21 Balls to Get Off the Mark

Pant’s outing in the first innings saw him dismissed for a low score. However, his approach in the second innings was strikingly different. The usually aggressive left-hander began his knock with an almost uncharacteristic caution, remaining scoreless for his initial 21 deliveries. This slow start reportedly caught even head coach Gautam Gambhir by surprise, who was observed watching from the dressing room with keen interest.

Despite the prolonged wait for his first run, Pant eventually settled into his rhythm. After spending a considerable amount of time at the crease, he shed his cautious demeanor and unleashed his familiar attacking style, signaling a shift in his batting strategy.

Three Sixes as Pant Changes Gears

Once Pant found his momentum, there was no holding him back. He began to assert dominance over the Sri Lankan bowlers, dispatching three massive sixes and playing a series of attacking shots against bowlers like Keshav Nuwanta and Dilum Sudheera. His powerful hitting and confident strokeplay underscored his intent to accelerate the scoring.

In an attempt to curb Pant’s onslaught, Sudheera adjusted his bowling plan, resorting to bowling deliveries well outside the leg stump. The aim was to limit Pant’s ability to unleash his customary big shots. However, Pant responded with creativity.

Instead of simply leaving these wide deliveries, which is the conventional response, Pant decided to engage them with his feet, kicking the ball away much like a footballer. This unusual yet effective maneuver not only prevented the ball from being declared a wide but also brought a wave of laughter from spectators and commentators alike. It was a testament to his spontaneity and his ability to find entertainment even in a competitive setting.

Ultimately, India emerged victorious in the warm-up game by a margin of six wickets. This match provided crucial practice and acclimatization for the team ahead of their upcoming Test series. India is now set to face Sri Lanka in the first Test of the two-match series, which is scheduled to commence on August 15 in Galle. The second and final Test will follow, starting on August 23 in Colombo, with Pant likely to be a central figure in India’s campaign.
