Magic Returns to Broadway: Rupert Grint to Reprise Iconic Role of Ron Weasley
The Wizarding World is making a grand return to the Great White Way. In a casting announcement that has sent shockwaves of nostalgia through the Harry Potter fandom, producers have confirmed that Rupert Grint, the beloved actor who brought Ron Weasley to life across eight blockbuster films, is set to join the cast of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
A Full-Circle Moment
Grint is slated for a strictly limited 17-week engagement at Broadway’s Lyric Theatre, with performances running from February 2 to May 30, 2027. The news, accompanied by a promotional video showcasing a script bearing his name, has already generated massive excitement among theatergoers.
For Grint, the return to the character that defined his childhood is a deeply personal experience. “Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old, and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life,” Grint said in a statement. “There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new.”
Building on Success
Grint’s casting follows the successful theatrical run of his former co-star, Tom Felton, who reprised his iconic role as Draco Malfoy earlier this year. Felton’s return saw a significant surge in ticket sales and box office interest, proving that the enduring appeal of the original cast remains a powerful draw for the Broadway stage.
Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender expressed their enthusiasm for the casting, noting that Grint’s participation bridges the gap between the original cinematic phenomenon and the stage play’s exploration of legacy and family. “His return creates a powerful bridge between the story audiences first fell in love with and the story of family, legacy, and the passage of time that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child carries forward,” they stated.
About the Play
Set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Cursed Child follows a grown-up Harry Potter, who is now married to Ginny Weasley, while Ron Weasley—having successfully managed his joke shop, Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes—navigates life alongside his wife, Hermione Granger. As their children head to Hogwarts, the legacy of the past begins to cast a long shadow, forcing the characters to face danger once more.
While Grint is perhaps most famous for his role as the loyal Weasley, he is no stranger to the stage. He previously made his Broadway debut in It’s Only a Play alongside stage legends Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, and established his dramatic credentials in the West End with a lead role in Jez Butterworth’s Mojo.
As fans eagerly await the February 2027 opening, the return of Ron Weasley to the Wizarding World represents a monumental chapter in the ongoing legacy of J.K. Rowling’s creation.
