“We kept our relationship private for a long time, about eight or nine months,” Blanco said in an interview with Spanish newspaper El País. He then revealed an important conversation that preceded their public announcement. “And she asked me, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? I understand if you want us to just be friends.’ And then I said, ‘You know what? Screw it.’ We’re lucky because we both have friends and family we’ve known since before all this, and we’re surrounded by a good group of people we love,” he recalled.
The significance of Selena Gomez’s question
Blanco explained that Gomez’s question about going public arose partly from considerations related to her established celebrity status. Gomez, who rose to prominence as a teen on a Disney Channel series, has built an expansive career spanning television, film and music. She received a recent Grammy nomination for Best Dance-Pop Recording for a collaboration with Blanco on the song “Bluest Flame.” Beyond her music career, Gomez has become the most Emmy-nominated Latina in history, with multiple nominations for her producing work on television series and appearances in various projects.

Benny Blanco’s journey with Privacy & Social Media
Blanco, who worked mainly behind the scenes for years, spoke about his tangle with social media and his privacy when talking about the public’s attention that he has been receiving for years off his personal life. “I don’t like to expose my life,” he told El País. “Famous people are under constant scrutiny: if you say one thing, it’s wrong, and if you say another, it’s also wrong.”The 12-time Grammy Award nominee admitted the difficulty of keeping things private in today’s entertainment world. “I would like to have more privacy” he stated while recognizing that he belongs to “that transitional generation where social media didn’t exist when I was a child.” He described his current approach to social media as selective and strategic. “I choose to occasionally post a picture of my wife or some delicious dish I’ve tried,” he explained, while maintaining focus on promotional content for his music.

Benny Blanco’s upcoming Spanish-language album and influences
Blanco’s forthcoming album ‘Hermoso’, which translates to “beautiful” in English, represents a departure into Spanish-language music genres. The project features a diverse blend of styles including cumbia, a musical genre that originated along the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Gomez is rumored to be featured on the album, continuing her own history of Spanish-language music releases that celebrate her Mexican heritage.Blanco described the cultural influences behind the album project. “I grew up in an area with a large Latin population, so that music has surrounded me since I was a child. You’d get in the car and Jeanette would be playing; in another car, cumbia would be on… I was always drawn to the drums and how the rhythms interacted with each other,” he explained. He expressed his admiration for Latin musical culture more broadly. “It’s a culture that’s always full of fresh ideas and people who aren’t afraid to go against the grain,” Blanco added.
Upcoming projects beyond the album
The album is scheduled for release on August 14 marking the beginning of an active period for Blanco’s career expansion. Approximately one month after the album’s release, his biography-meets-self-help book ‘F–k Failure’ will be published on September 15.
