Temasek’s India Gamble Pays Off as China Returns Sour
SINGAPORE – August 20, 2024 – While many foreign investors remain wary, Singapore’s state-owned investment giant, Temasek Holdings, is reaping significant rewards from its bold commitment to the Indian market. This bullish stance stands in stark contrast to the challenges Temasek has recently faced in China, where returns have soured amidst a shifting geopolitical and economic landscape.
A testament to its strategic foresight, three of Temasek’s Indian portfolio companies have made stellar debuts on the stock market this week, each surging over 30% above their initial public offering (IPO) prices. This impressive performance underscores India’s growing prominence in Temasek’s global investment strategy, even as a recent survey by BofA Global Research identified India as the least favored market in Asia among fund managers.
On Wednesday, logistics company Shiprocket saw its shares list at a robust 35% premium, closing the day at 143 rupees ($1.50) – nearly 50% above its IPO price. The IPO itself was overwhelmingly popular, oversubscribed nearly 100 times due to intense demand from both institutional and retail investors. Temasek holds a significant stake exceeding 5% in the company.
Dairy product manufacturer Milky Mist, which commenced trading on Tuesday, similarly saw its shares trade 40% above its IPO price by Wednesday. Temasek also maintains over a 5% stake in this burgeoning enterprise, further solidifying its presence in India’s thriving consumer sector.
Earlier in the week, Molbio Diagnostics, a healthcare firm in which Temasek owns an 8.74% stake, debuted on Monday and traded at a 26% premium to its IPO price, even after a slight dip on Wednesday. This follows the successful listing of Temasek-owned Indian hospital chain Manipal Health earlier this month, which is currently trading at a 25% premium to its IPO price.
"India is our best-performing market on a 10-year basis," a Temasek spokesperson revealed to CNBC, highlighting the fund’s substantial investment in the region. "We have deployed nearly $9 billion in India in the last three years. We were a net buyer of listed Indian equities during the past financial year, using periods of market volatility to add selectively to high-conviction positions."
This unwavering optimism from Temasek sharply diverges from the broader trend among foreign investors, who collectively divested nearly $19 billion from Indian equities last year and have continued to be net sellers for much of this year, resulting in total outflows of $24.7 billion through August 19, according to data from NSDL.
The BofA Global Research survey further underscored this skepticism, with fund managers citing concerns such as the lack of artificial intelligence plays, slower economic growth, the pace of reforms, and elevated valuations as reasons for their underweight positions in India.
Nitin Jain, Chief Executive and Director of Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Singapore, acknowledged the survey as a "clear awakening signal to India policymakers that global investment in India is at the lowest level." However, he also noted an improving trend in foreign investment flows into India over the past three months, hinting at positive shifts in both debt and equity markets.
Despite these broader market sentiments, Temasek remains steadfast in its belief in India’s long-term potential. The fund stated it remains "constructive on India’s structural growth, underpinned by its large domestic consumer market, growing middle class, formalization, infrastructure build-out, and deepening capital markets."
Temasek’s investment strategy in India actively targets these themes, with significant holdings in consumer, financial services, and healthcare sectors. The spokesperson also indicated increasing interest in opportunities within industrials, infrastructure, and renewables.
The Singaporean fund’s total exposure to India now stands at a remarkable $42 billion, representing a "four-fold growth over the decade," according to the company. This substantial commitment and the recent string of successful IPOs clearly demonstrate Temasek’s conviction that India offers a compelling investment narrative, even as other global players remain on the sidelines.
Temasek Holdings‘ strategic pivot towards India signals a shifting landscape in global investment, potentially encouraging other cautious investors to re-evaluate the subcontinent’s burgeoning opportunities.
