The long-standing speculation surrounding the next iteration of Shimano’s flagship road groupset has reached a fever pitch at the Vuelta a España, where a mysterious, unreleased drivetrain has been spotted on the bikes of Alpecin-Deceuninck.

For months, cycling tech enthusiasts have been scouring the peloton for clues regarding the successor to the R9200 series, which has served as the benchmark since 2021. With the recent launch of the R9370 wheel range and prototype pedal sightings earlier this spring, momentum had been building—but the prototype components spotted near the team bus today confirm a significant leap forward: new Dura-Ace is officially moving to 13 speeds.

A Leap to 13 Speeds

The most striking detail captured in the early images is the 13-sprocket cassette. While 12-speed has been the standard for the top-flight road groupsets since 2021, the industry has been drifting toward 13-speed systems, with SRAM’s XPLR and Campagnolo’s Ekar and Super Record lines already making the jump.

While the exact range of the new cassette remains a mystery, the presence of a 13th sprocket suggests Shimano is looking to offer tighter gear spacing or a wider range to keep pace with its rivals. Industry experts speculate that this shift will require a new freehub body standard, meaning current 12-speed HG users may face hardware updates if they decide to upgrade.

Refined Ergonomics and Interface

Beyond the rear cassette, the shifters show a marked departure from the previous design. The hoods appear to have been reshaped, featuring a new, distinct "thumb" button on the inner face. This move addresses a common criticism of previous hidden buttons, opting for a more tactile, protruding button similar to the latest SRAM Red design. The new shifters also appear to house a small LED indicator, potentially signaling battery status or connectivity modes.

A "Semi-Wireless" Future

Perhaps the most surprising takeaway from the prototype is that Shimano appears to be sticking with its "semi-wireless" architecture. Contrary to rumors that the brand might shift to a fully wireless system—akin to its own XTR or the latest GRX gravel components—the presence of visible wiring connecting the derailleurs suggests that the front and rear derailleurs will remain linked to a centralized battery, likely tucked within the frame.

While some see this as a missed opportunity for full system intercompatibility, it maintains the reliability of the current platform that has defined the Di2 experience for years.

Design Continuity: Alloy Remains

Despite the industry-wide trend toward carbon-fiber cranksets, the prototype R9300 groupset appears to remain committed to Shimano’s signature hollow-forged alloy construction. Even following high-profile recalls of previous cranksets, Shimano shows no signs of abandoning its bonded-alloy methodology.

One unusual detail noted on the test bikes was the use of what appear to be aftermarket chainrings attached with bolt covers, rather than the seamless, integrated look usually found on Dura-Ace. This could indicate that the final production crankset is still undergoing refinement, or that Shimano is exploring better compatibility with 1x setups—a feature becoming increasingly vital in the professional peloton.

As the Vuelta progresses, we expect more details to emerge regarding the final specs and anticipated release date for this new milestone in road cycling technology. For now, the "R9300" stands as the strongest sign yet that the next generation of Shimano’s flagship is just around the corner.
