From Barren Soil to Lush Haven: The 16-Year Transformation of Suniel Shetty’s Khandala Farmhouse
In the high-octane world of Bollywood, where the relentless hustle often leaves little room for silence, actor Suniel Shetty has carved out a sanctuary that serves as the antithesis to his public life. His sprawling Khandala farmhouse, affectionately named ‘Jahaan,’ is more than just a luxury property—it is a testament to patience, environmental stewardship, and a deeply personal family legacy.
While the estate is now a lush, green paradise, the story of its origin is a stark contrast to its current beauty. When the actor first encountered the five-acre plot, it was nothing more than rugged, barren land defined by rocky terrain and a scattering of cacti.
A Fateful Walk with Destiny
The journey began two decades ago during a Holi vacation. Shetty, accompanied by his wife, Mana Shetty, and close family friends, was staying at a nearby property when a casual morning stroll with his son changed the course of their lives.
Recalling the moment in a past feature for Asian Paints, the Hera Pheri actor shared, “We all decided as a family that we’d come here for Holi. It was that evening when my son and I walked there and there were bare cacti all over, rocks, not a single tree… We stood there, and our little boy held my finger and said, ‘You know, Papa, isn’t this place beautiful?'”
That simple question ignited a vision in the actor. He returned to his wife, Mana, with the idea of building a home on the desolate site. His father-in-law eventually bestowed the name ‘Jahaan’ upon the property, marking the beginning of a 16-year project of love and landscaping.
Cultivating Nature
Transforming a barren landscape into a thriving ecosystem was no small feat. The couple took on the challenge of planting, nurturing, and protecting the land, which today boasts over 400 different varieties of trees and plants.
The architecture of the farmhouse was designed with a profound respect for the land. Rather than clearing the terrain, Shetty opted to integrate the structure into the natural environment. The house features high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and rustic wooden interiors that blur the line between indoor comfort and outdoor scenery. In an architectural marvel, one room even features an open ceiling, allowing a pre-existing, mature tree to continue its natural growth cycle inside the home. A natural stream weaves through the property, physically connecting the various sections of the estate and enhancing the peaceful ambiance.
A Legacy of Tranquility
For Suniel Shetty, Jahaan represents a return to his roots—a place where the demands of the film industry fade away. Whether he is working on highly anticipated projects like Hera Pheri 3 or reflecting on his celebrated career in films like Welcome to the Jungle, the farmhouse remains his ultimate grounding force.
The transformation of this Suniel Shetty property serves as an inspiring reminder that with enough time and intention, even the most barren ground can be turned into a flourishing, life-sustaining retreat.
