New Collaborative Pop-Up Venue Opens in Edinburgh to Tackle Future of Built Environment
EDINBURGH – A high-profile partnership between two of Scotland’s most influential architecture organizations is set to transform the city’s cultural landscape this autumn. Architecture and Design Scotland (A&DS) and the Space for Architecture, Carbon & Environment (SpACE) have announced the launch of a new, collaborative venue designed to serve as a critical hub for the built environment.
Located within the prestigious Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI), the project—dubbed A&DS:SpACE—will provide a dedicated platform for public exhibitions, industry events, and interdisciplinary discourse. Starting September 15, the venue will occupy the institute’s east wing, offering a “blank canvas” for designers, policymakers, and the public to engage with the urgent challenges facing our cities.
Bridging the Gap Between Industry and Public
The initiative aims to move architecture beyond professional silos and into the public consciousness. By hosting a rolling programme of events, the organizers intend to bridge the gap between academic research, professional practice, and civic life.
Jim MacDonald, Chief Executive of Architecture and Design Scotland, highlighted the ambition behind the collaboration:
“A&DS:SpACE is an opportunity to open up conversations about the buildings, places, and environments that affect all our lives. From climate action and housing to new technologies and design innovation, the programme reflects the breadth of issues facing the built environment today. We hope it becomes a valuable resource for the sector and an engaging destination for the public.”

The choice of the Edinburgh Futures Institute as a host venue is significant. As a hub for interdisciplinary research and innovation, the EFI provides a fitting backdrop for a project that seeks to rethink the future of urban design.

- AI in Practice: A dedicated series exploring the implementation of Artificial Intelligence in modern design and architecture.
- The Timber Revolution: An exhibition investigating the critical role of timber construction in delivering sustainable, low-carbon building solutions.
As urban centers grapple with the dual pressures of climate change and rapid technological evolution, A&DS:SpACE arrives at a pivotal moment.
