Defying the Odds: Lexus Keeps the IS Sedan Alive for 2027

Against the backdrop of a shrinking compact luxury sedan market, one veteran performer refuses to exit the stage. Lexus has officially confirmed that the IS will return for the 2027 model year, marking the thirteenth year of the current generation. To celebrate this milestone, the automaker has introduced a new, ultra-exclusive 2027 Lexus IS Special Appearance Package to keep the interest of brand loyalists piqued.

A Rare Survivor in a Culling Market

The automotive landscape has been brutal for traditional sedans. While the German “Big Three” continue to dominate, many of the Lexus IS’s former rivals have faced the chopping block. The Jaguar XE, Infiniti Q50, and Acura TLX have either been discontinued or relegated to the history books, while the future of the Genesis G70 remains uncertain. Despite the intense pressure to move toward SUVs and crossovers, Lexus continues to find a path forward for its stalwart sport sedan.

New Look, Tried-and-True Foundation

The 2027 Special Appearance Package is a celebration of aesthetics. The limited-run model features a striking “Envious Green” exterior paint, paired with a fresh, aggressive design for its 19-inch BBS wheels. Inside, the cabin receives black leather upholstery accented by green contrast stitching.

Beneath the fresh paint, however, lies the familiar mechanical foundation that fans have known for years. The special edition comes standard with the brand’s Handling Package—including an adaptive suspension and a Torsen limited-slip differential—as well as the Technology Package. Under the hood, it retains the 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine, producing 311 horsepower. This engine architecture has been a cornerstone of the Lexus lineup for nearly two decades, offering a level of predictable reliability that is increasingly rare in the modern market.

Why the IS Refuses to Fade

The longevity of the Lexus IS is less of a mystery when looking at the sales data. During the first half of 2026, Lexus moved 14,071 units in the United States, representing a significant 42% increase year-over-year.

While luxury buyers often chase the “next big thing,” the IS has carved out a unique niche where its age is perceived as a benefit rather than a drawback. It represents a refined, proven, and analog-feeling alternative to the increasingly complex digital dashboards found in modern competitors.

With only 350 units of this green-clad special edition slated for production across North America, the 2027 model serves as a “thank you” to a dedicated customer base. As the industry marches toward electrification and total digitalization, the continued success of the IS proves that there is still a massive audience for a car that simply does what it was designed to do: drive well and last forever. If current sales trends are any indication, don’t be surprised to see this platform return for 2028 and beyond.
