SteamDB Acquired by Nexus Mods Owners as Founding Developer Cites Burnout

In a significant consolidation within the PC gaming landscape, the community-run database SteamDB has been acquired by Chosen, the parent company of Nexus Mods. The move marks the end of an era for the independent project, which has served as an essential resource for gamers, developers, and publishers for over 13 years.

A Passion Project Transformed by Burnout

The acquisition was announced in a candid blog post by SteamDB co-founder xPaw, who revealed that the toll of maintaining the massive data-tracking site had become unsustainable. What began as a hobby project eventually ballooned into a full-time, high-pressure responsibility.

“The amount of hours I have worked on it could be considered a full-time job,” xPaw wrote. “After COVID and with the rise of AI, the internet we once loved is gone, and with it my passion.”

The developer explained that, despite searching for years for a team he could trust to take over, the increasing complexity of Steam’s ecosystem—constantly expanding with new features, games, and player data—made it impossible to continue operating as a “one-man band.” Fearing that the site might eventually fade into obscurity or be forced to shut down, xPaw identified Nexus Mods as the ideal steward to ensure the platform’s future.

Stability and Modernization

Victor Folmann, CEO of Chosen, emphasized that users should not expect any immediate, jarring changes. “We aren’t just folding it into Nexus Mods,” Folmann stated. “It’ll still be the same site with all its features and data.”

However, the acquisition promises significant upgrades behind the scenes. Chosen plans to transition SteamDB from a volunteer-heavy operation to one backed by a dedicated, funded team. This will allow for improvements to infrastructure, site security, and scalability. Additionally, the company intends to alleviate the burden on the community by funding the purchase of Steam keys for game file tracking, a task that has historically relied on user donations.

A New Horizon for Modding Integration

While the two platforms will maintain their individual identities for now, Folmann did not rule out future synergy. He suggested that potential integrations could make the “modding journey” more seamless, such as linking SteamDB entries to their respective Nexus Mods communities or using SteamDB’s backend version data to simplify mod maintenance for players.

To ensure the site remains sustainable without resorting to intrusive advertisements, Chosen plans to pursue more “light-touch” monetization, such as strategic partnerships and affiliate links.

The Changing of the Guard

This acquisition follows a similar leadership transition at Nexus Mods itself, which saw founder Robin ‘Dark0ne’ Scott step aside when Chosen took ownership in June 2023. As the industry continues to evolve, the shift highlights the increasing challenges facing independent community projects in an age where the sheer volume of data often outpaces the capacity of individual creators.

For now, xPaw will stay on during a transition period, ensuring that the database that defined a generation of Steam tracking remains in capable hands.
