India Set to Host Inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially announced that India will host the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy next year. The decision follows the removal of Sri Lanka as the host nation, with the tournament now set to be held across the Indian cities of Mumbai and Vadodara from February 14 to 28.

Hosting Rights Revoked Due to Administrative Concerns

Sri Lanka was originally slated to stage the six-team competition; however, the ICC confirmed that the hosting rights were stripped due to government interference within the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board. The governing body noted that the SLC is currently operating under an interim administration appointed by the Sri Lankan government.

While the ICC acknowledged that the SLC continues to work toward the “requisite reforms” outlined during the July Annual Conference, it ultimately opted to relocate the tournament. Following an assessment of alternative venues, including Bangladesh and South Africa, India was selected as the new host.

A New Chapter for Women’s Cricket

ICC Chairman Jay Shah heralded the tournament as a landmark moment for the sport. “The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 marks an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket,” Shah stated. “As the inaugural edition of the tournament, it will bring together the best teams in the world in an intense, high-quality competition.”

He added that the move aligns with the ICC’s long-term strategy to increase the frequency of major women’s tournaments. “With a marquee ICC women’s event now taking place every year, we have a significant opportunity to build greater momentum, provide more consistency, and create a stronger rhythm for the women’s game, its players, and its fans around the world.”

Tournament Format and Contenders

The six participating nations were determined by their standing in the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings as of the July 6 qualification cut-off. The lineup features Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.

The tournament will follow a round-robin league format, ensuring every team faces one another. The two sides that finish at the top of the table after the conclusion of the group stage will advance to the final, which is scheduled for February 28. Fans can expect world-class action at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai and the International Cricket Stadium in Vadodara, venues set to provide the backdrop for this historic Women’s Champions Trophy.
