In a treat for cinephiles, Priyadarshan’s 1994 masterpiece Thenmavin Kombathu and the Mohanlal-starrer Chandrolsavam are being reintroduced to modern audiences with state-of-the-art 4K resolution and Dolby Atmos sound technology.
The Return of a Timeless Masterpiece
Thenmavin Kombathu, widely regarded as one of the definitive films of Malayalam cinema, is headlining this wave of restorations. The film, which perfectly balanced romance, slapstick comedy, and a quintessential rural landscape, left an indelible mark on the cultural fabric of Kerala.
The restoration process has been a labor of love, with the team at Matinee Now painstakingly scanning original 35mm prints into 4K. “We watched that film and laughed… felt sad… We sang and enjoyed every song at our weddings and celebrations,” the makers noted in an emotional statement. “For the past year, we have been on a journey to bring those memories back to the big screen.”
The film features an ensemble cast that defines an era of Malayalam cinema, including Mohanlal, Shobana, Nedumudi Venu, Sreenivasan, Sukumari, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, and Kuthiravattam Pappu.
