US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Addresses India-Iran Ties Following SCO Summit
WASHINGTON/BISHKEK — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has downplayed speculation regarding a potential trade pact between India and Iran, following high-level discussions held on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.
Speaking on The Brian Kilmeade Show, Rubio addressed concerns regarding the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. When asked if the two nations were actively negotiating a formal trade deal, the Secretary of State offered a direct assessment: “Well, I don’t think there’s a trade deal between India and Iran.”
U.S. Position on Sanctions
While acknowledging that sovereign nations maintain independent foreign policies and frequently engage in dialogue with the Iranian government, Rubio issued a stern warning regarding the circumventing of U.S. sanctions.
“No country should be helping Iran evade sanctions,” Rubio stated. “No country should be out there helping them create mechanisms by which they can generate revenue that they will then use to sponsor terrorism and try to build a nuclear weapon.”
The Secretary of State emphasized that the administration of President Donald Trump maintains a firm stance on this issue, warning that any nation found facilitating such financial mechanisms could face secondary U.S. sanctions. “If countries decide to do that, then we’re going to have to sanction them too,” he added.
Balancing Regional Diplomacy
Prime Minister Modi’s engagement with President Pezeshkian focused on broader bilateral and regional stability. Following the meeting, the Prime Minister took to social media to express a commitment to strengthening long-standing ties with Tehran, noting an interest in diversifying the “trade basket” between the two nations.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the meeting as “fruitful,” highlighting that the leaders reviewed bilateral relations and the volatile situation in West Asia. According to the MEA, Modi reiterated India’s consistent position that regional conflicts should be resolved through “dialogue and diplomacy.”
Key points discussed during the summit included:
- Regional Stability: The leaders deliberated on efforts to secure lasting peace and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce in the Gulf.
- Maritime Security: Both sides expressed concerns regarding the safety of commercial shipping, seafarers, and civilians amidst ongoing regional hostilities.

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister has formally invited President Pezeshkian to India for the upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled to be held in New Delhi from September 12 to 13.
