Uniqlo Eyes Major Expansion in India as Textiles Sector Gains Momentum

NAGOYA – Japanese global apparel powerhouse Uniqlo is preparing for an aggressive growth phase in the Indian market. The retailer is not only planning to significantly increase its physical footprint but is also exploring opportunities to broaden its product sourcing strategy within the country for both domestic and international sales.

These ambitious expansion plans were confirmed following a high-level meeting between Uniqlo’s leadership and India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal.

A Rapid Retail Rollout

Minister Goyal expressed his enthusiasm regarding the retailer’s commitment, noting that the level of interest shown by Uniqlo’s executives was unprecedented compared to other international business leaders. “He is almost ready to start tomorrow,” the minister remarked, highlighting the company’s eagerness to capitalize on India’s growing retail landscape.

According to reports from Nikkei Asia, Uniqlo—which currently operates 20 stores across India—is setting its sights on a long-term goal of reaching 100 outlets by 2031. This expansion is part of a broader trend of international brands betting heavily on India’s burgeoning middle-class consumer base.

Strategic Shift in Textiles

The meeting also underscored a potential turning point for the India-Japan textile relationship. Historically, Indian textile manufacturers struggled to penetrate the Japanese market due to a disconnect in quality expectations and style preferences. However, Minister Goyal noted that domestic players are showing marked improvement in aligning their production with Japanese standards.

“There is interest on both sides in growing textiles trade,” Goyal said. By better understanding the specific demands of the Japanese market, Indian firms are successfully making inroads, moving beyond traditional exports to meet the rigorous quality requirements of premium global brands like Uniqlo.

Global Export Prospects

Beyond the Japanese market, India’s textile sector is bracing for a significant boost on the global stage. Government officials are optimistic that upcoming trade deals with the United Kingdom and the European Union will act as a major catalyst.

These agreements are expected to grant Indian exporters duty-free access, effectively leveling the playing field against competitors like Bangladesh, which has long enjoyed such privileges. As the sector continues to modernize, the government anticipates that the combination of increased foreign investment from brands like Uniqlo and improved market access through trade pacts will position India as a premier hub for global garment manufacturing.
