From Alpine Chills to Tropical Thrills: Until Dawn 2 Arrives This January
Following a high-profile reveal at this year’s Summer Game Fest, Sony has officially confirmed that the highly anticipated horror sequel, Until Dawn 2, will arrive on PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2025. The announcement, delivered during the latest State of Play showcase, puts an end to the speculation surrounding the game’s launch window, confirming that fans won’t have to wait long to return to the franchise’s signature brand of interactive terror.
A New Setting, A New Nightmare
While the original 2015 cult classic was defined by the claustrophobic, snow-swept isolation of Blackwood Mountain, the sequel is trading frostbite for heatstroke. The narrative shifts to an abandoned tropical paradise, Akishima Island. Players will step into the shoes of the “Dead True,” a crew of television ghosthunters whose pursuit of a story takes a harrowing turn.
According to Sony, the catalyst for this trip is a chilling encounter with a supernatural survivor named Yoona, which draws the crew to the island—a location that has been deserted for decades and hides ancient, malevolent secrets.
Familiar Faces and New Collaborations
The transition from the snowy peaks of the first game to the tropical environments of the second brings a fresh cast of characters. However, one iconic figure is making an unexpected return: actor Peter Stormare. Stormare, whose performance as the unhinged Dr. Hill served as one of the original game’s most memorable elements, is officially returning to the fold. Sony has remained tight-lipped on how Dr. Hill integrates into the story given the revelations of the first game, leaving fans to speculate on his role in this new mystery.
Behind the scenes, the development torch has been passed to Sony’s Liverpool-based Firesprite Games. In a move aimed at bolstering the game’s narrative depth, the studio has enlisted AdHoc Studio—the creative team behind the critically acclaimed Dispatch—to assist in crafting the story.
“You can expect a deeply layered story packed with rich characters, razor-sharp dialogue, fraught relationships, tough decisions, and yes… more than a few gruesome deaths,” said Firesprite creative director Stu Tilley in an official blog post. “Every choice, every interaction can ripple with dramatic consequences.”
Pre-Orders and Deluxe Additions
To coincide with the Until Dawn 2 release date, Sony has opened up pre-orders starting September 10. Early adopters will receive special Dr. Hill-themed bonuses, including the classic original outfit, an Akishima Island holiday outfit, and collectible in-game bobbleheads of the good doctor.
For those looking for a premium experience, a Deluxe Digital Edition will also launch on January 28. This version includes the “Y2K Neon Vibes” pack, which provides new outfits for the main cast, and the “Diorama of Death,” a special feature that allows players to revisit and analyze every gruesome death scene from unique camera angles.
As fans prepare for this new chapter, it serves as a reminder of how far the series has come. Originally released as an experimental horror title, Until Dawn has solidified itself as a modern genre staple. With a new studio at the helm and a shift in scenery, Until Dawn 2 looks poised to redefine the “science of fear” once more when it hits store shelves early next year.
