Apple Unveils New Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro Chips, Setting Record-High Starting Price
In a rare August product launch, Apple has officially refreshed its iconic Mac mini lineup. Despite maintaining the same exterior design that fans have come to know, the internal hardware has received a massive overhaul, headlined by the introduction of the new M6 processor and the powerful M5 Pro.
The update arrives nearly two years after the launch of the previous iteration. However, with the new hardware comes a significant shift in market positioning; the entry-level model now commands an $899 starting price, marking the highest point of entry in the Mac mini’s history.
A New Era of Silicon
Apple’s leadership emphasized that this release focuses heavily on artificial intelligence compute performance.
“Today, we’re debuting the next giant leap in performance and AI compute for Apple silicon with the incredibly advanced M6,” said Sri Santhanam, Apple’s vice president of Silicon Engineering Group. Built on a cutting-edge 2nm process, the M6 chip features a 12-core CPU—comprised of two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores—which Apple claims delivers 1.2x faster multithreaded performance than the M5 and up to 2.4x the performance of the M1.
The M6 also integrates a 12-core GPU, with each core featuring a dedicated Neural Accelerator. This configuration provides a roughly 30% increase in peak GPU compute for AI tasks compared to its predecessor.
For those requiring “ultimate desktop performance,” the M5 Pro model offers up to an 18-core CPU and a 20-core GPU, making it a formidable, ultra-compact powerhouse for professional workflows.
Refined Connectivity and Specs
While the chassis remains unchanged, the internal specs have been modernized to meet current connectivity standards:
- Memory: The M6 chip supports up to 32GB of unified memory with a bandwidth of 170GB/s.
- Networking: Both models now feature Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support, along with standard 2.5Gb Ethernet (with a 10Gb upgrade option).
- Ports: The M6 model is equipped with three Thunderbolt 4 ports, while the M5 Pro version steps up to three Thunderbolt 5 ports, alongside standard HDMI and Ethernet connectivity.
Market Anticipation and Supply
The announcement follows a period of extreme demand for previous-gen hardware, where wait times for the M4 version stretched as long as two months earlier this August. Given the limited supply chain, industry experts expect the new units to sell out rapidly.
Those hoping to secure the new hardware should note that the M6 Mac mini is available for pre-order starting August 25, though units will not begin shipping until September 22.
Pricing and Availability
The new pricing structure reflects Apple’s shift toward higher base specifications, though it may surprise long-time fans of the “budget” Mac:
- Mac mini (M6): Features a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD, starting at $899.
- Mac mini (M5 Pro): Features a 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD, starting at $1,699.
Apple is offering a $100 discount for verified military members and students via the education store. While currently assembled abroad, production is expected to shift to Apple’s facility in Houston, Texas, later in 2026.
