SS Rajamouli Embarks on Massive Global Outreach for ‘Varanasi’, Auditioning 1,500 Voice Actors

Visionary filmmaker SS Rajamouli is setting a new benchmark for global cinema with his upcoming magnum opus, Varanasi. In a move that underscores his commitment to artistic integrity, the director is undertaking a monumental effort to ensure the film’s emotional resonance transcends linguistic barriers. Rajamouli has announced a rigorous casting process to select voice actors for a staggering 50-language rollout, firmly rejecting the convenience of AI-generated audio in favor of authentic human performance.

A Dedication to Emotional Authenticity

For Rajamouli, the process of dubbing is far more than a technical necessity—it is an extension of the actor’s craft. According to reports, the filmmaker believes that relying on synthetic or AI-driven voices would dilute the raw intensity brought to the screen by stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran.

"Rajamouli doesn’t want the performance to get diluted when the film moves from one language to another," a source noted. "For him, dubbing is not just about translating the dialogue and matching the lip movements. The voice has to carry the emotion, personality, and intent of the character. He wants the audience in every market to experience the performance, not just know the dialogue."

This rejection of artificial intelligence is consistent with the filmmaker’s previous stance, where he famously dismissed claims that AI was utilized for the film’s promotional materials, labeling such suggestions an "insult to their artistic genius."

The Search for 1,500 Voices

To achieve this level of linguistic precision, the production team is launching an exhaustive talent search. The team plans to sample the work of over 1,500 voice artistes across various regions. By auditioning such a vast pool of talent, the production aims to find performers who can capture the specific cadence, tone, and emotional weight required for each of the 50 language versions, which include major regional Indian languages as well as international tongues like French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Japanese, and Korean.
