Jason Sanjay Unveils Filmmaking Journey: From Supportive Father Vijay to Childhood Memories and Family Bonds
Chennai, India – In a candid revelation, Jason Sanjay, son of acclaimed actor Vijay, has shed light on his transition into filmmaking, emphasizing the unwavering support from his father and sharing intimate details about his family life. Currently promoting his directorial debut, Sigma, starring Sundeep Kishan, Sanjay’s insights offer a unique glimpse into the dynamics of a prominent cinematic family.
Growing up immersed in the world of cinema, Sanjay’s decision to pursue filmmaking was a natural progression, cultivated by years of observing his father. “I have been to sets from a young age, so I was able to normalise that feeling. A lot of my friends saw cinema as pure entertainment from an audience point of view, but because I have been involved in that and I have seen my father in that profession for so many years, I always had that interest from a young age,” Jason shared during an interview on Telugu anchor Suma’s YouTube channel.
His aspiration to study filmmaking overseas was met with immediate approval and encouragement from Vijay. Jason recounted, “When I told him I wanted to go overseas, be independent and pursue filmmaking as a course, he didn’t hesitate. He was the first one to give me a green signal because he has been in the industry for so long. More than my mother and my sister, he actually understood the importance of it.”
Vijay’s support extended beyond mere permission; he actively encouraged Jason to explore and understand his own inclinations within the craft. “He said, ‘You go do the course, then only you will understand what you like, what is working for you, and whether you even like this profession. So you get an understanding of yourself.’ So he’s very supportive of that,” Jason recalled, highlighting his father’s foresight in encouraging self-discovery.
This structured approach to learning the ropes has now culminated in Sigma, slated for an August release, marking Jason’s significant foray behind the camera.
Before embarking on his directorial journey, Jason had a brief, albeit amusing, stint as a child actor in his father’s 2009 film, Vettaikaaran. He appeared alongside Vijay, a memory he now looks back on with a touch of humor. “I think I was eight or nine years old. We shot in Rajahmundry. And I remember my father came and told me he had an idea, he wanted me to be a part of it. I said okay,” he reminisced.
Despite the initial comfort owing to his familiarity with film sets, Jason now questions the necessity of his role. “The confidence came from the fact that I was used to sets and had been comfortable with crew members. It was a very normal feeling. Now, when I am all grown up, I look back and think, what was the need for me in the movie? It has no connection to it,” he candidly admitted.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Jason also spoke warmly about his family. He described his mother, Sangeetha, as his “biggest cheerleader,” a constant source of motivation despite his demanding schedule. “Till date, she treats me like a kid. After I started to work, I haven’t been able to spend time with her. But she constantly keeps a check on me and always has been my biggest cheerleader, motivating me at all times,” Jason said. He eagerly anticipates her feedback on Sigma, trusting her "transparent and honest" opinions.
His relationship with his sister also saw a transformation over the years. What began as a "cat and mouse" dynamic in childhood evolved into a closer bond as they matured, a connection strengthened by distance.
