TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Christopher Nolan‘s latest epic, The Odyssey, is currently dominating theaters worldwide and is projected to gross over US$257 million globally. The massive launch marks the biggest international debut of Nolan’s career, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises (2012), which opened to US$249 million.
Adapted from Homer’s ancient Greek epic, the film tells the story of Odysseus’ long, perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus alongside a star-studded cast including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and several other renowned actors.
Serving as writer, director, and producer, Nolan made cinema history by shooting the entire production in the 70-millimeter IMAX format. “If ever we are going to fulfill this dream of shooting the entire movie that way, this is the one. This is ‘The Odyssey.’” he said.
However, bringing the monumental myth to the big screen took a heavy physical toll on the filmmaker and his crew. “I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think. I mean, it’s ‘The Odyssey,’ of course it should be difficult. We’re not doing the job right making a film of ‘The Odyssey’ if it doesn’t seem difficult,” Nolan was quoted as saying by Deadline on Saturday, July 18, 2026 local time.
Since the process was so grueling, Christopher Nolan revealed he will take at least three years off before returning to work on a new film project.
A three-year hiatus is consistent with Nolan’s historical release rhythm. The director previously delivered major theatrical releases roughly every three years, including Oppenheimer in 2023, Tenet in 2020, Dunkirk in 2017, and Interstellar in 2014.
