Apple’s September 9 “Surprise and Shine” Event: What Not to Expect
As the anticipation builds for Apple’s annual fall showcase, scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, the tech world is bracing for a jam-packed presentation. While the stage is set for the debut of the high-end iPhone 18 Pro lineup, the company’s first-ever foldable iPhone, the Apple Watch Series 12, the fourth-generation Apple Watch Ultra, and potentially the AirPods 5, the “Surprise and Shine” event is not expected to be a catch-all for every rumored device in Apple’s pipeline.

A New Standard iPhone

Going forward, Apple intends to dedicate its September event exclusively to its premium Pro-tier hardware and the new foldable category.
When the iPhone 18 does eventually arrive, leaks suggest it could be powered by Apple’s cutting-edge 2-nanometer A20 chip. Memory configurations remain a point of contention among analysts, with estimates ranging between 9GB and 12GB of RAM. Notably, any model capped at 9GB may miss out on select features requiring advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities. Furthermore, upgrades are expected to include a 24-megapixel selfie camera and a refined display featuring a smaller Dynamic Island.
The Status of the iPhone Air
The iPhone Air, which launched alongside the iPhone 17 series in 2025, reportedly failed to meet sales projections. Consequently, a second iteration will not be unveiled this September. Despite lackluster initial performance, development for a successor continues, with a projected arrival in spring 2027. To better justify its premium $999 price point, the next “Air” model is rumored to incorporate a dual-lens camera system and improved thermal and power efficiency via the 2nm A20 Pro chip.
Apple Watch SE and Mac Hardware
Those hoping for a refreshed budget wearable will have to wait, as no new Apple Watch SE is expected for the remainder of 2026.
Similarly, the Mac lineup is currently in transition. While rumors indicate a redesigned “MacBook Ultra” featuring an OLED touch screen and a thinner chassis is in the works for late 2026 or early 2027, and a new M6-powered iMac is on the horizon, these will not be featured on September 9. Apple traditionally reserves its Mac announcements for October, preferring to keep the spotlight firmly fixed on its mobile ecosystem during the primary fall event.
