Wiltshire man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder

Officers were called to an address in Firsdown at around 4.45pm on Tuesday, May 5, after reports that a woman in her 50s had been seriously assaulted by a man known to her.

The woman was taken to the hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.

The suspect left the scene, prompting extensive searches involving armed officers and the police helicopter, with heightened activity reported in areas including Bishopdown Road and Spire View throughout the evening.

At approximately 10.40pm, a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon. He has been taken to Melksham custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Eirin Martin said: “We appreciate the significant concern this incident caused, with a heightened police presence across the city whilst searches of an address were carried out, as well as searches to locate the man.

“Please be reassured that this was an isolated incident with no risk to the wider public and we have arrested a man in connection with it.

“Thank you to the Salisbury community for their patience whilst we carried out our enquiries.”

Police confirmed there will continue to be an increased presence in the Spire View and Bishopdown areas as enquiries remain ongoing.

The incident follows a day of major disruption in Salisbury, which saw roads closed, armed officers deployed and a bomb disposal unit sent to an address in Spire View, with police later confirming the incidents were linked.
