Xi Jinping Poised for Landmark India Visit Amidst Efforts to Stabilize Ties
Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping is reportedly preparing to lead a significant delegation to New Delhi for the upcoming BRICS summit, scheduled for September 12–13. This move, which would mark his first visit to India in seven years, is being viewed by geopolitical analysts as a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to thaw relations between the two Asian giants.
While the summit’s formal agenda will focus on economic and political cooperation among the BRICS member nations, the spotlight will inevitably be on the diplomatic maneuvers between Beijing and New Delhi. The two nuclear-armed neighbors have been working to stabilize a relationship that was severely strained by deadly border clashes in 2020.
A High-Stakes Delegation
According to sources with direct knowledge of the planning, the Chinese side is currently coordinating intensive logistics. “Chinese officials are busy finalising hotels and security protocols,” one official noted, underscoring the scale of the operation.
Further highlighting the importance of the visit, reports suggest that President Xi is expected to be accompanied by a delegation of approximately 400 officials—a sharp increase from the 200-member team that traveled with him during his last visit in 2019. This massive entourage signals Beijing’s intent to engage in high-level discussions that go beyond the standard diplomatic pleasantries.
Managing Border Tensions
The relationship remains fragile despite a disengagement pact signed in October 2024, which followed a grueling four-year military standoff. The border, a 3,800-km (2,400-mile) stretch in the Himalayas, remains largely undemarcated. Recent reports of face-offs between Indian and Chinese patrols near a remote border region as recently as July have kept tensions elevated, with Indian officials emphasizing that peace along the border is a fundamental prerequisite for normalized ties.
In a move to pave the way for a productive summit, India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, traveled to Beijing this week to engage in critical boundary talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. These discussions are viewed as essential to managing long-standing differences and regional security concerns.
Converging Interests
While India and China continue to view each other as regional competitors, shifting global economic dynamics—particularly the impact of U.S. trade policies—have created a rare area of convergence. Political observers suggest that both nations are keen to ensure that external pressures do not undermine the stability and influence of the BRICS bloc.
When asked for comment, the Chinese foreign ministry maintained a cautious stance, stating, “China attaches great importance to and actively participates in BRICS cooperation, and supports India, the current chair, in successfully hosting this year’s BRICS summit.” However, they stopped short of confirming the president’s travel itinerary, adding, “We currently have no information available to provide.”
As the summit dates approach, the international community will be closely watching for signs that this Xi Jinping visit could lead to a more durable framework for coexistence between the world’s two most populous nations.
