Kerala Police Smash Interstate Drug Ring in Record-Breaking 12.8-kg MDMA Seizure

MALAPPURAM: In a major victory against the narcotics trade, the Kerala Police have intercepted an interstate drug trafficking operation, resulting in the seizure of 12.8 kilograms of MDMA—the largest quantity of the synthetic drug ever recovered by the state’s law enforcement agencies. The haul is estimated to have a street value exceeding Rs 10 crore.

The operation, led by the Malappuram District Police, culminated in the arrest of three key suspects: Jabir Ali and Shaim Akbar, both residents of Malappuram, and Mohammed Salih from Wayanad.

From Small Leads to a Major Breakthrough

The massive seizure was the result of persistent investigative work that began several weeks ago. The breakthrough was triggered by a routine bust at a private apartment in Manjeri town, where police arrested six individuals in possession of 100 grams of MDMA.

During subsequent interrogations, the suspects revealed critical information regarding a sophisticated, high-volume supply chain. Investigators uncovered a sprawling network spanning Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, which used secret locations to stockpile large quantities of narcotics before distributing them throughout Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Sophisticated Concealment and Distribution

According to police, the 12.8 kg of MDMA discovered in the recent raid had been meticulously divided into smaller packets, ranging from 100 to 500 grams. These were intended for “drops” at various locations across the state, stretching from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod.

The traffickers employed high-end tactics to bypass security, concealing the illicit cargo within hidden compartments inside the door panels of an Innova SUV. Police identified Tamil Nadu cities—specifically Coimbatore, Palani, and Kodaikanal—as vital transit points for the network. By monitoring suspicious movements and middlemen in these areas, a special team under Malappuram District Police Chief Chaithra Teresa John, supported by the Manjeri Inspector T.G. Dileep and the district’s DANSAF squad, successfully intercepted the vehicle near Coimbatore.

Expanding the Investigation

The successful operation marks a significant blow to the regional drug trade. Following the recovery of the massive 12.8 kg consignment, authorities are now focused on tracing the origin of the drugs and dismantling the upper echelons of the supply chain.
