Tripura Honors Commonwealth Gold Medalist Asmita Dey with Land Allotment, Fulfilling CM’s Promise
AGARTALA, India – In a significant gesture of recognition and support for athletic achievement, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha officially fulfilled his promise to Commonwealth Games gold medalist Asmita Dey, allotting her a prime piece of land in Agartala for the construction of a new home. The announcement came during a grand felicitation ceremony held on Wednesday, where the state celebrated Dey’s historic achievement as the first Indian judoka to clinch a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
The 23-year-old judoka, who hails from a small village in South Tripura, was lauded for her extraordinary journey and unwavering determination. Her victory in the women’s -48kg category at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where she triumphed over Canada’s Heidi Quach in a thrilling golden-score contest, has brought immense pride to the nation and particularly to her home state. In addition to the land allotment, the state government presented Dey with a cheque of Rs 10 lakh, further acknowledging her remarkable feat.
From Humble Beginnings to Commonwealth Glory
Chief Minister Saha, speaking at the felicitation event, underscored the inspiring narrative behind Dey’s success. He highlighted her humble origins, noting that her father worked as a cycle mechanic in Sonaichari, a small village in South Tripura. "The journey from an obscure village in South Tripura to a podium finish at Glasgow was a race against time," Saha remarked. "Her father was a cycle mechanic at Sonaichari. Against all odds, she stood firm on her mission and achieved phenomenal success for the country."
Saha reminisced about a poignant meeting with Dey at Tripura Bhavan in New Delhi following her return from the Commonwealth Games. It was during this meeting that Dey expressed her earnest desire to own a house in Agartala. "During the meeting, Asmita revealed she desperately wanted a house in Agartala. I promised to fulfil her wish, and today a piece of land has been allotted to her," the Chief Minister stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting its athletes.
