Jammu and Kashmir’s promising pacer, Auqib Nabi, has finally seen his unwavering dedication to the sport culminate in a significant milestone: a call-up to the Indian Test squad. Despite the prolonged wait for this coveted opportunity, Nabi maintained an unshakeable focus on his performance, driven by the conviction that consistent excellence would inevitably pave his path to national recognition. His steadfast belief has now been validated with his inclusion as a replacement for the injured fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, ahead of the eagerly anticipated two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which is set to commence in Sri Lanka this Saturday.
Nabi’s ascent to this level is not without a strong foundation of achievement. He played a pivotal role in Jammu and Kashmir’s historic maiden Ranji Trophy title victory last season, a testament to his skill and determination. Reflecting on his journey, Nabi shared his sentiments with fellow uncapped player Saransh Jain in a video released by the BCCI. He articulated his consistent expectation of an India call-up, underscoring the philosophy that a cricketer’s primary focus should always be on delivering strong performances, knowing that these efforts are consistently observed and evaluated. “Yes, I had expectations. But the mindset of a cricket player should be of performing and that the other people are watching,” Nabi explained. “I knew that I would get the call-up today or tomorrow because when you are doing well for so many years, you are meant to get the returns from the hard work.” He elaborated on his approach, stating, “So I would bowl with the mindset that my job is to take wickets and perform and the rest is up to the one above. I felt great when my name came up. My family is very happy and I don’t think there can be anything greater than this.”
Saransh Jain, a member of Madhya Pradesh’s Ranji Trophy-winning squad in the 2021-22 season, which triumphed over Mumbai in the final, echoed Nabi’s sentiments regarding the essential virtue of patience in the arduous journey towards representing India. “You have to have patience in Test cricket and if you want to play Test cricket for India, you have to have patience in that too,” the 33-year-old Jain remarked. He recounted his own extensive journey, which began with his Ranji Trophy debut in 2014-15, acknowledging the sacrifices and unwavering hard work involved. However, he maintained an unwavering belief that his opportunity to play for India would eventually arrive, crediting his family, particularly his father who was also a Ranji Trophy player, for instilling this crucial perspective. “My dad, who is a Ranji Trophy player, told me the same thing. You just have to have patience, things will automatically come to you,” he added.
Both players vividly recalled the surprising circumstances surrounding their respective selections. Saransh recounted receiving the news while driving to a temple, noticing the flurry of calls and messages that confirmed his inclusion. Nabi’s experience was equally unexpected. He was at the airport, preparing to board a flight to Bangalore for a camp at the Centre of Excellence (CoE), when he received a call inquiring about his whereabouts. Upon informing them of his travel plans, he was informed that his destination had changed dramatically. “They told me that I didn’t have to go there; I had to come to Sri Lanka and that I was selected,” Nabi narrated. The news initially left him in disbelief, as the squad had already been announced, and he was mentally prepared for intensive training at the camp. This unexpected turn of events underscores the unpredictable nature of selections in the world of cricket, where dedication and performance can lead to unforeseen opportunities.
