Why Indonesians Are Becoming Pickier About Where They Travel

Indonesian Travel Trends Shift from Destinations to Experiences, Budgeting for Deeper Meaning

JAKARTA – The landscape of Indonesian travel is undergoing a significant transformation, moving beyond traditional holidays and simple transit to embrace a lifestyle driven by personal goals and the pursuit of unique experiences. This shift, highlighted by a recent Lokadata survey, indicates a profound change in how Indonesians perceive and plan their journeys.

According to the Lokadata survey, which polled 1,300 individuals, a striking 31 percent reported that their primary motivation for travel was to "recharge and take a break from their daily routine." This finding underscores a growing desire among travelers to seek emotional and experiential fulfillment rather than merely visiting new locations. The focus has decisively moved towards the emotional sensations and specific experiences sought during a trip.

The Rise of Experience-Oriented Travel

This evolving trend is evident in the burgeoning popularity of tourism activities meticulously tailored to individual interests. Modern Indonesian travelers are increasingly journeying to attend concerts by their favorite artists, witness thrilling sporting events, immerse themselves in local culinary scenes, or embark on novel activities. In this context, physical destinations often serve as the stage upon which these desired experiences unfold.

This paradigm shift in travel philosophy has directly impacted how travelers allocate their budgets. Survey data reveals that a substantial 88 percent of respondents are willing to spend more to ensure a truly memorable travel experience. This willingness to invest further suggests that travelers are becoming more discerning, meticulously evaluating the perceived benefits and intrinsic value of each trip.

Gaery Undarsa, Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Tiket.com, elaborated on this trend, stating, "Travelers are increasingly conscious of the value they seek to derive from a trip. They are not merely looking for destinations but are also considering whether the experience aligns with their interests, needs, and priorities." He made these remarks in a press statement on Friday, August 14, 2026, emphasizing the growing importance of relevance in travel choices.

Destinations Remain Key, Industry Adapts

While the pursuit of experiences is a dominant force, the destination itself retains a crucial role in the decision-making process. The survey found that 74 percent of respondents still prioritize choosing their destination first before planning their activities. The remaining 26 percent, however, embark on their travel planning by first identifying specific activities they wish to undertake. This indicates a diverse approach, yet a significant majority still anchors their travel around a chosen location.

These evolving consumer behaviors are prompting online travel agencies (OTAs) and the wider tourism industry to adopt a more customer-centric approach. Technology, once primarily a tool for booking tickets and accommodations, is now expected to play a more sophisticated role. It must facilitate not only transactions but also assist travelers in planning journeys that perfectly align with their personal preferences and aspirations.

"Technology should not only simplify the booking process but also help people plan their trips based on their personal preferences and goals," Undarsa affirmed. "A customer-centric approach enables us to continually understand the increasingly diverse needs of travelers."

This shift signifies a maturation of the Indonesian travel market, where travelers are no longer passive participants but active curators of their adventures, seeking deeper meaning and tailored experiences from every journey.
