India on the Brink of Dominant Test Victory as Sri Lanka Crumbles in Galle
Galle, Sri Lanka – India stands poised for a commanding victory in the first Test against Sri Lanka, needing just six more wickets on the final day after a devastating bowling performance in the final session reduced the hosts to a precarious 84 for four at stumps on Tuesday. Sri Lanka now faces an improbable target of 372 runs, with 288 runs still required.
The day concluded with Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva unbeaten on 31, alongside Sonal Dinusha, who showed resilience with 25 runs after scoring a century in the first innings. However, the historical odds are stacked heavily against the Islanders. The highest successful fourth-innings chase at Galle remains Pakistan’s 344 in 2022, and a target exceeding 200 has been successfully chased only twice at the venue since 1998, underscoring the monumental task ahead.
Suthar and Prasidh Spearhead Sri Lankan Collapse
Sri Lanka’s chase began under immediate pressure following a brief rain interruption. The Indian pace attack, featuring Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, wasted no time in making inroads. Siraj hurried Nishan Fernando into an ill-judged pull shot, resulting in his dismissal as Prasidh Krishna took a well-judged catch in the deep.
Prasidh Krishna continued to impress, striking again to remove Kamindu Mendis. After a series of deliveries angled into the left-hander, the pacer artfully shaped one away, inducing an edge that was comfortably pouched by KL Rahul in the cordon.
Adding to Sri Lanka’s woes, left-arm spinner Manav Suthar made a crucial double strike. He accounted for Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who had entered the match as a concussion substitute for Dinesh Chandimal. Chandimal, who had suffered a blow to his shoulder and head while fielding earlier in the day, failed to clear the concussion test despite a clear scan. Sooriyabandara’s Test debut lasted just a single delivery as Suthar trapped him leg before wicket. The spinner then further deepened Sri Lanka’s predicament by dismissing Lahiru Udara, leaving the home side reeling.
Pant’s Audacious Knock Propels India’s Lead
Earlier in the day, despite Sri Lankan bowlers exploiting the conditions effectively and claiming wickets at regular intervals, India managed to establish a formidable lead thanks to significant contributions from Rishabh Pant and Devdutt Padikkal.
Rishabh Pant once again lived up to his reputation for counter-attacking cricket, smashing a quickfire 66 runs off just 53 balls. His explosive innings included reaching his half-century with a six off Lahiru Kumara and a vital 54-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. The six that brought up his fifty also marked a personal milestone for Pant, making him the first Indian and the fastest batter to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket. His innings, though eventually ended by a nick behind off Kumara, had already transformed India’s position in the match.
Devdutt Padikkal, building on his impressive 167 in the first innings, continued his excellent form with a fluent 44. He attacked the spinners with sweeps, cuts, and drives before being trapped on the back foot by Keshara Nuwantha.
India’s second innings had a shaky start, with Yashasvi Jaiswal edging Asitha Fernando in the opening over. However, KL Rahul steadied the ship, attacking Prabath Jayasuriya with two sixes before falling to the spinner after a 65-run partnership with Padikkal. Shubman Gill also fell to Jayasuriya, trapped leg before, before the pivotal partnership between Pant and Padikkal built the decisive advantage that now sees India on the brink of a massive victory.
