India Seizes Control on Day 4 in Galle, Padikkal Credits Aggression and Pace Attack

Galle, Sri Lanka – India stands on the brink of victory in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, thanks to an aggressive batting display and a potent pace attack that left the hosts reeling on Day 4. Young Indian batsman, Devdutt Padikkal, speaking after stumps, highlighted the team’s conscious effort to regain control and apply pressure, a strategy that has paid rich dividends.

Sri Lanka closed Day 4 in a precarious position at 84 for 4, still requiring a daunting 288 runs to chase down India’s imposing target of 372. Padikkal, who contributed a valuable 44 runs to India’s second innings, emphasized the team’s mindset following some quick wickets earlier in the day. "We had to make sure to put pressure back on them with quick runs to establish control again," Padikkal stated during the post-day press conference, outlining the team’s proactive approach.

India’s second innings, which began the day at a comfortable 54 for 2, saw a significant acceleration. Despite being bowled out for 193 in 48.5 overs, crucial contributions from Rishabh Pant (a blistering 66 off 69 balls), Padikkal (44 off 75), and KL Rahul (35 off 47) ensured a commanding lead. Pant’s attacking innings, in particular, was lauded by Padikkal: "Great entertainment, he produces moments. Puts them under pressure. Everyone is happy to have a player like him in the side."

The momentum carried into Sri Lanka’s chase, as India’s fast bowlers made early inroads. Mohammed
