Shakira Pledges $1.25 Million for Colombia Earthquake Relief, Focuses on Educational Reconstruction

Quibdó, Colombia – Global pop icon Shakira made an unannounced, yet impactful, visit to Quibdó, the capital of Colombia’s Chocó province, on Monday, August 17, 2026. Her visit comes in the wake of a devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake that ravaged western Colombia on August 10, killing at least 287 people and leaving a trail of destruction. During her time in Quibdó, Shakira pledged a significant US$1.25 million towards the urgent reconstruction of educational facilities severely damaged by the seismic event.

The earthquake, with its epicenter in the impoverished and geographically isolated Chocó province, destroyed over 26,000 homes and impacted hundreds of schools across the country. Chocó, a region historically challenged by limited infrastructure due to its extensive river networks and unpaved roads, faces immense logistical hurdles in the recovery process.

During her visit, the Grammy-winning singer personally toured affected classrooms, engaging with students and meeting with local dignitaries, including Chocó Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba and Quibdó Mayor Rafael Bolaños. Her primary concern, as she conveyed to journalists, is the long-term impact on education. "What worries me the most is that schools are not rebuilt once this emergency is over," Shakira stated, as quoted by the New York Post. "Every day that children don’t go to school is a day they miss out on their future."

The initial US$1.25 million recovery package, as reported by Billboard, is a multi-faceted contribution. It includes US$500,000 provided jointly by Shakira and Live Nation, a further US$500,000 from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, and US$250,000 from the CAF Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. These crucial funds will be meticulously managed through Shakira’s long-standing philanthropic organization, Fundación Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation), which has a commendable track record of operating educational initiatives in Chocó for over two decades.

Accompanying Shakira on this vital trip was prominent philanthropist Howard Buffett, as reported by the Female Quotient. Buffett’s organization, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, announced a separate and substantial commitment to reconstruct an additional 10 schools within the province, significantly bolstering the rebuilding efforts. "When she calls, I come," Buffett remarked during the site visit, as cited by the New York Post, highlighting the strong collaborative spirit behind these initiatives.

Beyond the immediate school rebuilding program, Shakira expressed her personal dedication to restoring Quibdó’s damaged technological university, according to Billboard. This further commitment underscores her holistic approach to addressing the educational crisis in the region.

Addressing students at a Quibdó high school, Shakira delivered a powerful message of solidarity and hope. "There is not a way to alleviate the pain of so many, there are no magic solutions," she acknowledged, "But what there is, is commitment to be here alongside those from Chocó, to not abandon El Chocó like it historically has been abandoned, until every Colombian and every person from Chocó can return to their normal lives like they deserve."

Shakira’s initiative is part of a broader, heartening mobilization by Latin American musicians to assist with disaster relief in the region. Billboard has reported that other prominent Latin artists, including Marc Anthony, Chayanne, and Karol G, have also launched benefit concerts and donation-matching campaigns to support ongoing recovery efforts across both Colombia and neighboring Venezuela. This collective effort demonstrates the profound impact that cultural figures can have in times of crisis, rallying support and providing tangible assistance to communities in need.
