New Delhi, India – A groundbreaking achievement in the world of semiconductor design has put the Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies-Technical Campus (VIPS-TC) on the global map. A team of talented students from the School of Engineering and Technology has successfully designed an FPGA-integrated silicon chip, a feat that has earned their design a coveted spot for physical fabrication under the highly competitive openPOWER HW Design Hackathon 2025.
This remarkable project showcases an Open FPGA framework featuring a Microwatt CPU, meticulously crafted using the SkyWater 130 nm Open-Source Process Design Kit (PDK). Following its successful design phase, the chip underwent fabrication and QFN-packaging through a collaborative effort between SkyWater Technology and ChipFoundry, based in San Francisco, USA. The fabricated chip has now been delivered to VIPS-TC, marking a significant milestone for the institution and its students.
The newly fabricated chip is poised to revolutionize hardware acceleration and rapid prototyping of advanced digital systems. Its innovative design will empower researchers and students to efficiently evaluate, optimize, and validate complex hardware designs for a wide array of embedded systems and next-generation semiconductor applications. This capability is crucial for advancing technological progress in various sectors.
The brilliant minds behind this pioneering design and verification effort are students Sameer Srivastava, Ketan, Shikha, and Ira Tyagi, who worked under the expert mentorship of Dr. Anand Kumar Singh. Their dedication and technical prowess have culminated in a tangible and impactful contribution to the field of microelectronics.
This outstanding achievement is a testament to the robust and forward-thinking research ecosystem cultivated at VIPS-TC. VIPS-TC’s state-of-the-art VLSI Laboratory plays a pivotal role in this success, boasting an impressive suite of industry-standard Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. These include cutting-edge software from Cadence, Synopsys, AMD Vivado, Siemens, Keysight ADS, and Ansys, all made accessible under the ‘Chip to Startup (C2S)’ Initiative of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.
Beyond its VLSI capabilities, VIPS-TC is continuously enhancing its research infrastructure with advanced facilities such as the NVIDIA DGX H100 AI Laboratory, a dedicated Quantum Computing Lab, an AICTE-approved IDEA Lab, and a specialized Drone Lab. These cutting-edge resources enable students to immerse themselves in and contribute to the forefront of technological innovation, spanning critical domains like Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Computing, Cybersecurity, and Semiconductor Design.
