India Revitalizes World Test Championship Hopes with Dominant Galle Victory

Galle, Sri Lanka – August 19, 2026 – India has dramatically reignited its campaign for a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 final at The Oval, securing a convincing 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Galle International Stadium on Wednesday. This crucial win not only marked a triumphant return to form for Shubman Gill’s side but also saw a valuable uptick in their points percentage (PCT) in the fiercely contested WTC standings.

The victory serves as a significant morale booster for India, coming as their first Test assignment since a disappointing 0-2 home series loss to South Africa in November of the previous year. The rain-affected match extended into its fifth day, with India maintaining firm control throughout the contest, ultimately bowling out the Sri Lankan opposition to seal their fifth win in the current WTC cycle. This also marks their first Test triumph since overcoming the West Indies in Ahmedabad last year.

Captain Shubman Gill was seen celebrating with Manav Suthar, symbolizing the team’s collective effort in securing this vital win. The positive result saw India’s PCT climb from 48.14 to 53.33. Despite this improvement, they currently hold the fifth position in the WTC table, trailing formidable cricketing nations such as Australia (77.77 PCT), South Africa (75.00 PCT), New Zealand (72.22 PCT), and Bangladesh (66.67 PCT).

Australia continues to lead the pack with an impressive PCT of 77.78, despite a recent home defeat to Bangladesh that highlighted the competitive nature of the championship. Sri Lanka, conversely, now occupies the sixth spot, their PCT dropping to 33.33 after suffering their second defeat in five Tests.

India’s path to The Oval is still arduous but now appears more attainable. They have one more Test remaining in the ongoing series against Sri Lanka before embarking on a two-Test tour of New Zealand. The climax of their WTC campaign will feature a highly anticipated five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against arch-rivals Australia on home soil next year.

India’s Road to the WTC Final: A Statistical Outlook

The mathematical permutations for India to reach the WTC final are becoming clearer. Should India manage to win all eight of their remaining Tests, their final points percentage could reach an impressive 74.07%. This scenario would place them in an exceptionally strong position to secure one of the top two spots required for qualification.

Even a slightly less dominant performance, such as winning at least six of the remaining eight games, would significantly bolster India’s chances and put them in a very strong contention for the W WTC Final 2027.
