HP Challenges Budget Laptop Market with New $499 OmniBook 3 Featuring OLED Display

HP has officially expanded the availability of its latest thin-and-light laptop, the HP OmniBook 3 (14-hz0488nr), positioning it as a direct and more affordable competitor to the MacBook Neo. With a current street price as low as $499.99, HP is attempting to capture the budget-conscious segment by offering superior hardware specifications in a highly portable chassis.

Performance and Hardware

At the heart of the OmniBook 3 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon X X1-26-100, the entry-level chip in the Snapdragon X series. This processor features eight Oryon CPU cores capable of speeds up to 2.98 GHz, paired with a 45 TOPS NPU designed to handle AI-driven workloads.

While the OmniBook 3 holds its own in multi-core performance, it trails the Apple A18 Pro in single-core and graphics benchmarks. Furthermore, the base model comes equipped with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Tech experts note that while this is a standard starting point, users should be mindful that Windows 11 can be memory-intensive, potentially making the 8 GB limit a bottleneck for heavy multitaskers.

Display and Battery Life

The standout feature of the OmniBook 3 is its 14-inch OLED display. Offering 100% DCI-P3 color coverage and a resolution of 1920 x 1200, it provides vibrant visuals that punch above its price class, though its 300-nit peak brightness is noticeably dimmer than the 500-nit IPS panel found on the MacBook Neo.

HP has significantly prioritized longevity in this model, integrating a robust 60 Wh battery. The company claims the device can achieve an impressive 41 hours and 45 minutes of battery life in internal testing, making it a compelling option for students and travelers who prioritize uptime.

Connectivity and Design

The OmniBook 3 distinguishes itself from many modern ultra-portables with a surprisingly generous port selection. It includes:

  • Two full-function 10 Gbps USB-C ports
  • Two USB-A ports
  • HDMI 2.1 output
  • A dedicated headphone jack

Wrapped in a 3.13-pound chassis, the laptop also includes a 1080p webcam equipped with a privacy shutter and support for Wi-Fi 6E, ensuring modern connectivity standards are met.

Availability and Pricing

The pricing strategy for the OmniBook 3 is currently volatile, offering savvy shoppers a chance to find significant deals. While the official HP store lists the device at $749.99 and Amazon has it pre-listed at $599.99, Best Buy is currently offering the unit at a discounted price of $499.99, making it an aggressive entry into the sub-$500 market for a high-quality, OLED-equipped machine.
