Police Provide Update on Investigation into Death of Soldier Liam Potts
Northumbria Police have provided a fresh update regarding the ongoing investigation into the death of Liam Potts, a 22-year-old soldier whose body was discovered in the River Tyne earlier this week. The discovery followed an extensive search operation that spanned several days after Mr. Potts was reported missing in the early hours of last Saturday.
Mr. Potts, described by those who knew him as a "much-loved" figure, had last been seen following a night out with friends. Despite a community-led search effort in Northumberland, his body was tragically recovered near Wylam Bridge on Tuesday.
In connection with the case, two men, aged 22 and 23, were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team has now confirmed that both men have been released on bail as inquiries continue.
Clarifying the Circumstances
Detective Inspector Rachael Rutherford, the Senior Investigating Officer, addressed the public’s concerns regarding the circumstances surrounding the death. She sought to clarify the sequence of events near the bridge on the night Mr. Potts went missing.
"Our thoughts remain with Liam’s family during this difficult time," DI Rutherford stated. "The facts remain the same that Liam was on the bridge at the time of the collision, but he was not an occupant of the vehicle and was not struck by the vehicle."
She added that investigators are working to determine whether there is any direct link between a collision that occurred on the bridge and Mr. Potts entering the water. "Enquiries have revealed that Liam, for reasons yet to be established, entered the water within minutes of the collision," she explained.
Call for Public Cooperation
As authorities work to piece together the final moments of the young soldier’s life, they have acknowledged the frustration and confusion within the local community. DI Rutherford urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, noting that online speculation could potentially hinder the ongoing investigation.
"We know there has been a lot of confusion and speculation in the community," she said. "It’s clear that Liam was a very popular young man. We are committed to finding answers for Liam’s family and we will continue to provide updates as we gather more information."
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward. Members of the public can contact Northumbria Police via social media, the force’s website live chat, or by calling 101, quoting reference number NP-20260814-0016. Officers have also reiterated their plea for the public to respect the privacy of the grieving family during this tragic period.
