Gill Wins Toss, India Opts to Bat in High-Stakes Second Test Against Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first on Sunday at the historic Sinhalese Sports Club, looking to maintain his side’s dominance in the second and final cricket test of the series.

India enters the match with significant momentum after a commanding 165-run victory in the series opener in Galle. With the visitors leading 1-0, the pressure sits squarely on the shoulders of the Sri Lankan side, who must secure a win in Colombo to salvage a series draw.

Tactical Changes for the Hosts

Sri Lanka has opted for strategic personnel shifts as they look to counter India’s momentum. Most notably, Pasindu Sooriyabandara has been handed his first full test start. Sooriyabandara initially joined the squad as a concussion substitute for Dinesh Chandimal during the first match; with Chandimal remaining unavailable due to injury, the youngster retains his spot in the middle order.

Additionally, the hosts have turned to youth at the top of the batting lineup, bringing in Kamil Mishara to replace opener Nishan Madushka. Mishara will be making his test debut, a high-pressure baptism as the hosts look to post a competitive total against a disciplined Indian bowling attack.

India Bolsters Spin Reserves

While India leads the series, they have not remained stagnant in their team composition. The tourists made a notable change to their bowling lineup, dropping left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav in favor of spin-bowling allrounder Saransh Jain.

Jain, also making his test debut, arrives with a solid domestic pedigree, boasting an impressive record of 2,223 runs and 188 wickets in first-class cricket. His inclusion suggests a tactical focus on maintaining run pressure while utilizing the spin-friendly conditions of the Sinhalese Sports Club pitch.

India: Shubman Gill (captain), KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar, Saransh Jain, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.
