Mitchell Starc Dominates as Australia Clinches Rare Two-Day Victory Against Bangladesh
MACKAY – In a stunning display of pace bowling, Mitchell Starc propelled Australia to a resounding victory against Bangladesh in the second Test, wrapping up the match inside just two days. The win, sealed by an innings and 51 runs, marked a dramatic turnaround for the hosts following their shock defeat in the series opener in Darwin.
A Historic Finish
The match in Mackay has etched its name into the history books, becoming the 28th Test match in the 149-year history of the format to conclude within just two days. Out of 2,632 Tests played since 1877, only about 1.1% have finished with such lightning speed.
The rarity of this feat is highlighted by a long-standing dry spell in the sport’s history; between 1947 and 1999, not a single Test concluded in two days despite 1,233 matches being played. However, the trend has seen a marginal resurgence in the 21st century, with 13 such matches occurring since the year 2000.
Starc’s Masterclass
Mitchell Starc was the undisputed architect of the Australian triumph, claiming extraordinary match figures of 10-51. His devastating spell in the first innings—where he took 6-12—reduced Bangladesh to a meager 64 all out, setting the tone for the remainder of the contest. He added four more scalps in the second innings to secure his fourth career 10-wicket haul.
With this performance, Starc pushed his career tally to 445 Test wickets, leapfrogging South African pace legend Dale Steyn to climb into 10th place on the all-time list of highest wicket-takers. Reflecting on his longevity, Starc reaffirmed his commitment to the traditional format: "Test cricket, I’ve said it before, it will always be the pinnacle for me."
Bangladesh Struggles to Adjust
Bangladesh, coming off a high from their first Test victory, found themselves outclassed by the extra bounce and movement in Mackay. Despite a spirited 31 from captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and an unbeaten 29 from veteran Mushfiqur Rahim, the visitors were dismissed for 95 in their second innings.
"I think this is a different condition," Shanto admitted after the loss, noting the challenges posed by the venue. "There’s a little bit more extra bounce and swing in the air. It’s challenging, but we need to adjust."
Supporting Starc’s brilliance, Australian captain Pat Cummins and spin ace Nathan Lyon also dismantled the batting lineup, taking three wickets each to ensure the match reached its conclusion well before the scheduled end.
As the cricketing world reflects on this two-day Test, the result serves as a stark reminder of how rapidly conditions can dictate the fortunes of even the most elite teams in the game.
