"We Showed Our Character": Bangladesh Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto Reflects on Historic Test Series in Australia

MACKAY, Australia – Despite a swift two-day defeat in the second Test against Australia, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto remains optimistic about his team’s growth, emphasizing that the experience gained during this series is a vital stepping stone for the nation’s future in red-ball cricket.

The two-match series concluded with a 1-1 draw after Australia’s potent pace attack dismantled the visitors in Mackay, securing an innings and 51-run victory. However, the narrative of the tour remains defined by Bangladesh’s monumental achievement in the first Test at Darwin, where the side recorded their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil—a feat that broke a 23-year drought.

A Call for Consistency and Exposure

Reflecting on the series during the post-match presentation, Shanto expressed pride in his team’s discipline and tenacity. However, he stressed that for Bangladesh to truly compete at the highest level, they require more frequent opportunities to test themselves in overseas conditions.

"I think it is a very proud moment as a team. We showed our character and we were disciplined," Shanto said. "We need to be consistent. I believe if we are able to get more chances in similar kinds of conditions here, it will help us. We don’t want to wait another 23 years to come here and play two Test matches."

Shanto noted that the learning curve is steep, particularly when playing in unfamiliar conditions. The Mackay wicket proved significantly more challenging than the Darwin surface, offering steep bounce and excessive movement that neutralized the batting lineups of both sides.

The Starc-Cummins Masterclass

The second Test was defined by a ruthless display of fast bowling from the Australian veterans. Mitchell Starc was virtually unplayable, delivering a devastating spell in the first innings to claim 6 wickets for just 12 runs, effectively sealing Bangladesh’s fate early.

Bangladesh struggled to handle the dual threat of Starc and captain Pat Cummins, who capitalized on the favorable conditions to bowl the visitors out for 64 and 95 across their two innings. While the batting lineup faced significant pressure, Shanto was quick to point out that the struggle was mutual, with the Australian top order also finding the pitch treacherous against Bangladesh’s own pace spearheads.

Pacing the Future

One of the most heartening takeaways for the tourists was the performance of their fast-bowling unit. Shoriful Islam produced a career-defining performance in the first innings, taking 7/48, while Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud also earned high praise from their skipper for their ability to bowl with intensity and control.

"It was quite difficult for all the batters," Shanto said. "If you look at their batting also, they struggled. The way Shoriful, Taskin, and Hasan bowled, I am really happy to see them. It was a difficult wicket to bat on, to be very honest."

As the team prepares to return home, they carry with them the confidence of their historic win in Darwin and the emergence of promising talents like Tanzid Hasan, who notched a brilliant century earlier in the series. According to the skipper, the ability to adapt to such hostile conditions is exactly what his young side needs to evolve into a more formidable Test team.

"As a team, if we want to go forward, we need to adjust to these conditions," Shanto concluded. "I hope this experience will help us moving forward."
