Shaan Reflects on Arijit Singh’s Potential Exit and Shares Lessons from Sonu Nigam and KK
In a candid conversation, veteran playback singer Shaan has weighed in on the recent discourse surrounding Arijit Singh’s decision to step away from the playback singing industry. Addressing the speculation, Shaan offered a measured perspective, suggesting that the industry may not have heard the last of the powerhouse vocalist just yet.
A Measured View on Arijit Singh’s Future
Speaking with film critic Komal Nahta, Shaan was asked about the buzz surrounding Arijit Singh’s supposed retirement. Dismissing the idea that the ‘Tum Hi Ho’ singer has permanently “hung up his boots,” Shaan noted that Singh continues to be active in the recording studio.
“He has recorded many songs that are yet to be released. So, in the next two years, you’ll get to hear a lot of Arijit Singh,” Shaan remarked. He further emphasized that such decisions in the creative world are rarely permanent, stating in Hindi, “Pathar ki lakeer pe thodi kisi ne likh diya hai” (It’s not exactly set in stone).
Lessons from Sonu Nigam and KK
Shaan’s reflection on Singh’s career led him to look back at his own journey during his peak in the industry. He admitted that he once faced a similar internal conflict when he was in his early thirties, feeling the weight of constant work and a desire to contribute to social causes.
Unlike Arijit Singh, who has been known to be highly selective with his projects, Shaan revealed that he was much more prolific—and less discerning—during the height of his career. He candidly recalled warnings from his esteemed contemporaries, Sonu Nigam and the late KK.
“My contemporaries like KK and Sonu Nigam used to tell me, ‘Don’t sing all kinds of songs. Keep your standard, bro,’” Shaan shared.
However, Shaan explained that his refusal to say "no" stemmed from a place of sentiment rather than ambition. Coming from a musical family—his father was the late music director Manas Mukherjee—he found it difficult to turn down requests from his father’s colleagues and their families. "If someone called out to me affectionately, how could I say no?" he questioned, adding that he prioritized the blessings he received over maintaining an exclusive image.
He humorously recalled that his work-heavy schedule often left him exhausted, noting that when his wife would ask what he sang during the day, he would often reply, "I don’t remember," leaving her suspicious of his long hours.
A Musical Reunion
Despite the introspection on his past, Shaan remains a vital voice in Bollywood. He has recently made headlines for reuniting with actor Saif Ali Khan after nearly two decades. The duo has collaborated on the song "Mera Hero Hai Woh," featured in the upcoming film Haiwaan, starring Akshay Kumar.
As the music industry continues to evolve, Shaan’s reflections serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between professional output, artistic integrity, and the personal values that drive a singer’s career.
