Embark Studios Pauses Arc Raiders Expeditions for Major Overhaul Until 2027

Embark Studios has announced a significant shift in the development roadmap for its extraction shooter, Arc Raiders. The studio confirmed that the upcoming fifth Expedition, scheduled to kick off next month, will be the final one available to players for an extended period, with the mode not expected to return until early 2027.

The developer explained that the hiatus is necessary to implement fundamental changes that go beyond simple "incremental fixes." After analyzing player feedback regarding the core loop, Embark identified several critical pain points that require a deeper rework.

"We have been carefully reviewing your feedback on Expeditions, and while we’ve made ongoing improvements along the way, we’ve come to realise that some of the issues you’ve raised, like the tight departure windows, the reward structure, and accessibility for new players, need more than incremental fixes," the team stated in an official blog post. "They call for bigger changes."

The Final Expedition Window

Players looking to jump into the action before the extended break have a three-week window to participate. The fifth Expedition will run from September 8th through September 29th. Unlike previous iterations, this window offers an additional week of playtime.

In a move to improve player agency, Embark is making quest progress resets optional. Players can now choose whether to keep their current quest line or start fresh, though the team noted that those who opt out of the reset will need an alternative method to unlock the Hullcracker Blueprint. Furthermore, the studio has removed the "last call" grace period, meaning players must commit to their departures within the specified three-week timeframe.

Rewards and Progression

Despite the upcoming hiatus, Embark is ensuring that current progress remains meaningful. The fifth Expedition offers a variety of incentives, including:

  • The Zenith Outfit: Fully unlocked for players who complete all five Expeditions.
  • Stash Space: Players can earn up to 12 additional slots, capped at a total of 60.
  • Buff Persistence: Consecutive buffs—such as XP boosts, repair value increases, and Scrappy material gains—will be preserved during the hiatus, ensuring that long-term player efforts are not wiped when the mode goes offline.

For those concerned about partially completed Caravans, the developer confirmed these will be automatically converted into "Ermal Vouchers" of equal value, which can be traded for coins or used to acquire ARC Parts and firearms.

The Path Forward

While Expeditions will be off the table for over a year, the "Trials" mode will experience a much shorter downtime. The current season of Trials is set to conclude on September 22nd, with a planned return on October 8th.

The decision to pause the primary game mode follows a period of mixed reception for the title. In its [Arc Raiders review] (https://www.eurogamer.net/arc-raiders-expedition-5-pause-2027-changes), Eurogamer highlighted the title’s accessible, friendly community and engaging PvE combat, while also noting the controversy surrounding the studio’s use of AI-generated voice acting.

As the community prepares for the long wait until 2027, Embark Studios has promised to share a more detailed look at the planned improvements and the future direction of the game this September.
