Asus Unveils the ROG Ally X20: A Premium Anniversary Handheld That Prioritizes Comfort Over Raw Power
Asus is set to celebrate two decades of its Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand with a high-end, limited-edition handheld that aims to redefine the premium gaming experience. The upcoming OLED Xbox Ally X20, as confirmed by company spokesperson Don Nguyen, brings a touch of flair to the segment with its signature translucent chassis and elegant gold trim.
However, Asus is betting that gamers will look past the aesthetics and fall in love with the refined hardware underneath. The X20 is poised to be one of the most ergonomic Windows handhelds on the market, featuring a massive, vibrant 7.4-inch 1080p OLED display. Industry testing suggests this screen is currently the fastest, brightest, and clearest display available on any handheld device to date.
Design and Ergonomics: Refinement Above All
Beyond the stunning visuals, the device boasts significant quality-of-life improvements. The chassis has been re-engineered with extra-comfy grips for extended play sessions. Notably, Asus has included a versatile D-pad that can physically rotate between 4-way and 8-way inputs, catering to both retro enthusiasts and modern gamers. Furthermore, the company has removed the dedicated Xbox “Library” button, a common pain point for users who have accidentally triggered the menu during intense gameplay.
While the $1,300 price tag is undeniably steep, Asus reps Anthony Spence confirmed that the company remains committed to its broader ecosystem. Both the standard $600 Xbox Ally and the $1,000 Ally X will remain in the lineup, ensuring that the X20 acts as a top-tier enthusiast option rather than a direct replacement for the existing range.
The $2,500 “Ultimate” Bundle
For those looking to go all-in, Asus is launching a comprehensive collector’s bundle priced at $2,500. This package transforms the handheld into a portable desktop-class experience by including:
- The ROG Ally X20 handheld: The core device with all its premium upgrades.
- ROG XREAL X1 glasses: A pair of high-fidelity 240Hz smart glasses (valued at $849).
- Dbrand Killswitch ecosystem: A custom, matching protective case featuring a hardshell screen cover, improved joystick toppers, and a built-in kickstand.
- Pelican Travel Case: A branded, ruggedized case to safely transport the entire kit.
Where Does the X20 Fit?
In a market increasingly crowded with hardware focused solely on raw teraflops, the ROG Ally X20 occupies a unique niche. It isn’t positioning itself as the most powerful device—a title currently held by upcoming GPD Win Max 3 models featuring Strix Halo processors—nor is it claiming the title of the most portable.
Instead, the X20 is aiming for the “refined” crown. By focusing on display quality, haptic comfort, and thoughtful layout design, Asus is targeting the user who values the experience of playing as much as the frame rates on screen. With a release scheduled for this fall, we will soon see if the most premium Windows handheld experience is worth the premium investment.
