Virginia Becomes 15th State to Integrate Driver’s Licenses into Apple Wallet

Virginia residents can now officially add their driver’s licenses and state IDs to their Apple Wallet, marking a significant milestone for the Commonwealth as it becomes the 15th U.S. jurisdiction to support this digital identification feature.

The launch allows iPhone and Apple Watch users to store a secure, digital version of their credentials on their devices. This move follows a growing trend of state-level adoption, with Virginia joining a list that includes Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, and West Virginia, along with Puerto Rico.

How to Set Up Your Digital ID

Adding a license to your device is a straightforward process within the iOS ecosystem:

1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
2. Tap the “+” icon located in the top-right corner.
3. Select “Driver’s License or State ID.”
4. Choose “Virginia” from the list and follow the on-screen prompts to verify your identity.

Once the setup is complete, the digital ID functions through near-field communication (NFC). When presenting the ID at a participating location, users simply tap their device against an identity reader. A key security feature of the system is that users can view exactly what information is being requested before authorizing the transmission via Face ID or Touch ID. Importantly, users never need to hand over their device to a third party, enhancing both convenience and privacy.

Where Can You Use It?

While the Apple Wallet ID feature continues to expand, its current utility remains specific. The primary use case is domestic air travel; Apple reports that these digital IDs are now accepted at TSA security checkpoints in over 250 airports across the United States. Outside of aviation, the feature is accepted at a limited selection of businesses and integrated apps.

Important Limitations

Despite the digital convenience, Apple stresses that this feature is currently a supplement rather than a complete replacement for a physical card. Most notably, Apple Wallet IDs are generally not accepted by law enforcement. Drivers are still legally required to carry their physical license during traffic stops. Furthermore, until widespread merchant adoption occurs, users should continue to carry their physical ID to avoid potential issues at locations not yet equipped with the necessary identity readers.

The Road Ahead

Apple’s digital identity program shows no signs of slowing down. The company is currently working to bring the feature to North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Utah in the near future. Additionally, long-standing commitments from Connecticut, Kentucky, and Mississippi suggest that the list of participating states will continue to grow in the coming years.
