IICT and Netflix Launch Major Scholarship Program to Fuel India’s Creative Economy

In a significant boost for India’s growing creative sector, the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) has joined forces with Netflix to offer 100 scholarships for students and working professionals. The initiative, part of the broader Netflix India Storytelling Initiative, aims to cultivate industry-ready talent across the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) landscape.

A Path to Professional Excellence

The scholarship program covers six distinct professional tracks, providing financial aid ranging from 50% to 80% of the total course fees. Applications for these spots are currently open and will be accepted until September 30.

The programs eligible for the scholarship include:

One-Year Diploma Programmes:

  • Interactive Comics & Sequential Arts
  • Visual Effects Mastery

Six-Month Certificate Programmes:

  • Virtual Art Department Content Creation
  • Media Tech Workflow
  • Art of Character Animation
  • E-Sports & Gaming Management

Empowering the Next Generation

This partnership follows a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos on August 5. During the discussion, the Prime Minister emphasized India’s rich tradition of storytelling and its potential to become a global hub for content creation. In response, this initiative was launched to align academic training with the evolving demands of the global industry.

IICT CEO Vishwas Deoskar noted that the collaboration is designed to integrate real-world industry perspectives into the academic framework. Notably, the curriculum for the “Visual Effects Mastery” and “Media Tech Workflow” programs has been co-developed with input from Netflix to reflect contemporary industry standards.

Selection Process

The selection process is merit-led, focusing on the applicant’s creative potential and technical craft. Candidates will undergo a multi-stage evaluation, including:

  1. Eligibility Review: An initial check of academic and program-specific requirements.
  2. Online Assessment: An MCQ-based test for eligible candidates.
  3. Portfolio/Course Review: A deep dive into the candidate’s specific work or skills.
  4. Personal Interview: A final evaluation conducted by IICT faculty and members of the scholarship panel.

About IICT

As India’s national centre of excellence for the AVGC-XR sector, the IICT was established by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in collaboration with the Maharashtra government, FICCI, and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Currently operating from the NFDC Complex in Mumbai, the institute is set to expand into a state-of-the-art, 10-acre campus at Film City, Goregaon.

“The creative economy is at an inflection point as technology changes how stories are created,” said Chanchal Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Chairman of the IICT Board.
