AFRY Secures Contract for 191-MW Hydropower Project in Himachal Pradesh, India

Swedish engineering and consulting giant AFRY AB (STO:AFRY) has been tapped to spearhead a major renewable energy initiative in Northern India. The firm has been selected to provide comprehensive design, project management, and construction supervision services for the 191-MW Thana Plaun hydropower project located in the mountainous state of Himachal Pradesh.

The Thana Plaun facility is designed as a run-of-the-river project, a strategy that minimizes the need for large-scale reservoirs by diverting a portion of a river’s flow through turbines to generate electricity. This approach is increasingly favored for its reduced environmental footprint compared to traditional large dam projects.

As the appointed consultant, AFRY will leverage its deep technical expertise to oversee the critical phases of development. Their involvement spans from the initial engineering designs to the final stages of construction supervision, ensuring that the facility meets international safety and operational standards.
