UK Aviation Soars to New Heights: Q2 2026 Passenger Numbers Shatter Records
UK airports have experienced a historic second quarter in 2026, with new data from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) confirming that passenger volumes have surpassed the record-breaking figures set during the same period last year.
Between April and June 2026, a total of 81,158,297 passengers either boarded or disembarked at UK airports. This marks a significant milestone, representing an increase of over 120,000 travelers compared to the 81,035,648 recorded in the second quarter of 2025. This surge continues the upward momentum observed during the first three months of the year, signaling a robust recovery and sustained appetite for international travel.
European and Asian Markets Drive Growth
Holidaymakers continue to favor European getaways, with travel to Spanish hubs showing strong gains. Madrid and Barcelona saw passenger increases of 15% and 11% respectively.
The growth is not limited to Europe, however. Asian destinations have seen a remarkable spike in interest, with Pakistan recording a staggering 307% increase in passenger numbers. China and India also saw steady growth, with traffic rising by 11% and 5% respectively.
A key driver of this overall volume has been the low-cost carrier sector. Budget airlines, including easyJet, Ryanair, and Jet2, collectively transported 2.25 million more passengers in Q2 2026 than they did during the same period in 2025.
Industry Resilience Amid Global Uncertainty
Despite the celebratory figures, the aviation sector is navigating a complex geopolitical landscape. While the industry has shown remarkable resilience, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has had a tangible impact. Following Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice against non-essential travel to parts of the region—which remained in effect until June 18—passenger numbers to Dubai were halved compared to last year, and Middle Eastern carriers saw a notable decline in volume.
Commenting on the latest statistics, Ross Lydall, a spokesperson for the UK Civil Aviation Authority, noted: “Demand for flying remains high, as passengers adjust their travel plans around global events. These results highlight the sector’s resilience and hard work and keep it on course for another record-breaking year.”
Regional Connectivity and Economic Impact
Beyond the major hubs, regional airports also saw strong performance. Cardiff experienced a 16% rise in passenger traffic, while Newcastle and Inverness both posted 8% growth. Meanwhile, the most popular destinations for UK travelers during the quarter remained consistent, with Dublin, Palma de Mallorca, Amsterdam, Alicante, and Malaga topping the list.
Karen Dee, Chief Executive of AirportsUK, the trade association for UK airports, emphasized the vital role of these connections to the national economy.
“It is good to see that air travel has continued to grow, despite ongoing challenges in places like the Middle East,” Dee said. “As an island nation, our air links play a pivotal role in business, trade, investment and tourism, so it is extremely important that we support and grow our connectivity. This will contribute towards the economic growth which is key to the UK’s future prosperity.”
As the aviation sector moves into the second half of the year, these record-breaking Q2 passenger numbers provide a strong indicator that the UK’s travel industry is well-positioned for continued expansion.
