SpaceX Announces Massive $100 Billion “Starbase Louisiana” Launch Complex

VERMILION PARISH, La. — SpaceX has officially unveiled plans for an ambitious, $100 billion infrastructure project in southern Louisiana, marking a major expansion for the aerospace giant. The proposed site, dubbed “Starbase Louisiana,” is set to become the company’s fourth U.S. launch location and its second dedicated Starship campus, aiming to revolutionize the frequency of spaceflight.

A Landmark Investment

The project, situated on 125,000 acres at Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish, represents one of the most significant private industrial investments in state history. SpaceX anticipates that the facility will eventually support thousands of Starship flights annually, solidifying the company’s role as a primary driver of the burgeoning commercial space economy.

Construction is scheduled to commence in 2027, with the company targeting the inaugural launch from the site by 2029. Beyond launch pads, the sprawling complex will feature advanced vehicle processing facilities, on-site methane fuel production systems, and dedicated power generation infrastructure. To facilitate operations, SpaceX is also reportedly evaluating the addition of a private airport and deep-water shipping capabilities to streamline the transport of massive rocket components from their manufacturing hubs in Texas.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The economic windfall for the region is expected to be substantial. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has indicated that the project will create upwards of 3,000 initial positions, with the potential to scale to 10,000 high-skilled jobs as the complex matures.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry lauded the announcement, writing on social media: “A day for the history books! With [SpaceX’s] $100 billion investment in Louisiana, we are proving that Louisiana is open—open to new jobs, honest wages, and to those who dare to build something that lasts.”

The path to breaking ground was cleared following a resolution of a long-standing legal dispute between the state and ExxonMobil regarding coastal wetland loss. The settlement effectively paved the way for the development of the 18-mile coastal tract.

Acknowledging the environmental sensitivity of the Pecan Island area, which serves as a vital habitat for numerous migratory bird species, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell emphasized the company’s commitment to stewardship. The firm has pledged to fund extensive conservation efforts, including the creation of thousands of acres of marshland through the beneficial use of dredged materials.

Scaling for the Future

The move to Louisiana aligns with Musk’s broader vision for the Starship program, which serves as the backbone for the company’s expanding Starlink satellite internet network and is a critical asset for NASA’s Artemis lunar exploration missions.

This expansion complements SpaceX’s existing footprint, which includes primary launch operations in Texas, two additional Starship pads currently under construction in Florida, and active Falcon 9 launch sites in both Florida and California.

As the aerospace industry moves toward higher launch cadences, the development of this $100 billion Louisiana launch site positions the Pelican State as a key player in the next generation of global space exploration.
