GTA 6 Map Size: Rockstar Says It’s ‘a Very Big Map’

Rockstar Promises Their Most Immersive Open World Yet in Grand Theft Auto VI

For fans of open-world gaming, the eternal question regarding any Rockstar Games title is always the same: “How big is the map?” As anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI reaches a fever pitch, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has finally provided some clarity, teasing an experience that aims to eclipse everything the studio has built to date.

While the “bombastic” main missions and cinematic storytelling have always been the bedrock of Rockstar’s success, the true longevity of their titles often lies in what remains after the credits roll. Drawing comparisons to the immense scale of 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2, Nelson confirmed that GTA 6 will offer a playground defined by its depth and emergent gameplay.

“There is a whole other world in Red Dead Redemption 2, yes. GTA 6 is very much like that,” Nelson told IGN in an exclusive interview regarding the [GTA 6 world size] and scope. “There’s a whole lot of stuff that you discover emergently that we’re not necessarily directing you to through objectives or blips or icons on a map as well. If you take a bit of time and explore, you will be rewarded—a lot. It’s a big map, a very big map.”

Next-Gen Power Driving Immersion

Creating a virtual world of this magnitude requires more than just raw geography; it demands the technological muscle of current-generation hardware. By moving away from the limitations of the PS4 and Xbox One era, Rockstar is utilizing the enhanced memory and processing power of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to populate Vice City and the surrounding state of Leonida with unprecedented detail.

Nelson emphasized that the studio is doubling down on the “magical” quality of Red Dead Redemption 2—the feeling of being constantly distracted by the world as you travel from one point to another. The goal, he explains, is to craft the most “densely populated and complex world we have ever built.”

A More Diverse Population

One of the most immediate visual upgrades will be the game’s NPCs. Previous titles were often restricted by shared animation sets, meaning characters had to adhere to uniform body types to ensure interactions—like sitting in cars or fighting—didn’t break the game’s logic.

Thanks to a new system that allows the team to “retarget those animations on the fly,” GTA 6 will feature a drastically higher level of diversity. Players can expect to see NPCs with a wide variety of heights and body shapes, making the streets of Leonida feel like a genuine, living reflection of a real-world metropolitan area rather than a looped collection of assets.

As the development team leverages years of experience and modern tech, it is clear that GTA 6 is aiming to set a new high-water mark for the open-world genre. Whether or not it will be the largest map in Rockstar’s history is only half the story; for the developers, the priority remains creating a world so deep that players can truly get lost in it.
