Apple TV Subscription Costs Rise Again: Service Joins Industry-Wide Wave of Price Hikes

Streaming fans will soon have to dig a little deeper into their pockets to catch the latest episodes of Ted Lasso and other popular Apple originals. The tech giant has officially announced another round of price increases for its streaming platform, marking the fourth hike in just four years as the company aligns with broader industry trends toward premium subscription costs.

Beginning Friday, Aug. 28, the monthly subscription for Apple TV will rise to $14.99, an increase of $2 from the previous $12.99 rate. For those who prefer an annual commitment, the cost is jumping from $99 to $119. Apple has confirmed that existing subscribers will receive a notification approximately one month before the new rates go into effect on their accounts.

A Steep Climb Since Launch

The latest adjustment underscores a dramatic shift in the service’s pricing strategy. When Apple TV (formerly known as Apple TV+) first launched in 2019, it served as an aggressive market entrant with a $4.99 monthly price tag. Since then, the monthly fee has effectively tripled, reflecting the platform’s massive evolution from a service with a limited content library to a powerhouse boasting over 300 original TV shows and films.

Alongside the standalone service, Apple is also bumping up the cost of its individual “Apple One” bundle—which includes Apple TV, Apple Music, 50 GB of iCloud+ storage, and Apple Arcade—from $19.95 to $21.95 per month.

Part of a Global Trend

Apple’s decision to increase rates follows a sustained industry-wide push by major streamers to maximize profitability. In the last two years alone, competitors including Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Paramount+, and YouTube Premium have all implemented similar price hikes. The trend shows no signs of slowing down; NBCUniversal’s Peacock recently raised its rates, and ESPN is slated to increase streaming prices on Sept. 17.

Expanding the Content Library

The price hikes coincide with a significant expansion of the service’s offerings. Once considered a boutique streaming option, Apple TV has matured into a prestige platform. Its current catalog features critical darlings like The Morning Show, the breakout hit Severance, and high-profile new series such as Widow’s Bay.

The streamer has also made a major mark on the film industry. Beyond housing Oscar-winning titles like CODA, the platform has achieved massive commercial success with hits like the Brad Pitt-led F1: The Movie, which recently claimed the title of the highest-grossing sports film in global box office history.

As the competition for “share of wallet” intensifies, consumers are increasingly feeling the squeeze. For more details on these updates, you can read the latest report on the Apple TV price increase here.
