Abu Dhabi Bolsters Environmental Conservation with New Ranger Training Initiative

ABU DHABI, UAE – In a significant move to strengthen the stewardship of the emirate’s natural heritage, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has officially entered into a strategic partnership with the Abu Dhabi Nature Academy. The collaboration was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the 23rd edition of the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX 2026).

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the EAD. Representing the two organizations were Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the EAD, and His Excellency Dr. Mubarak Saeed Al Shamsi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Abu Dhabi Nature Academy.

Empowering the Frontline of Conservation

The partnership aims to launch an integrated training programme designed specifically to elevate the technical and operational capabilities of rangers working within the Sheikh Zayed Protected Areas Network.

By combining the EAD’s extensive regulatory and field-based expertise with the Academy’s specialized educational frameworks, the initiative seeks to create a robust pipeline of national talent. The training curriculum is structured into three progressive stages: professional assessment, hands-on field application, and the conferment of specialized certificates.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Deployment of modern monitoring and surveillance technologies.
  • Smart environmental conservation strategies.
  • Eco-tourism management and operational leadership.

A Legacy of Stewardship

His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Erth Zayed Philanthropies, emphasized that the initiative is deeply rooted in the values of the UAE’s Founding Father.

“Through this partnership, we continue to follow the path of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan,” said His Highness. “We are reaffirming our firm commitment to safeguarding nature reserves and enhancing their sustainability for generations to come by investing in our national talent.”

Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri highlighted the critical role of these professionals, noting that rangers are at the very “forefront” of the Agency’s mission to preserve the emirate’s biodiversity. “We are building a generation of distinguished national talent ready to safeguard our environment for the future,” she added.

Building Global Excellence

The Abu Dhabi Nature Academy, which operates under the umbrella of the Ekthar Wildlife Development Group (affiliated with Erth Zayed Philanthropies), is tasked with producing field-ready professionals capable of managing ecosystems, biosecurity, and biodiversity.

As ADIHEX 2026 continues at the ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi until September 6, the partnership serves as a cornerstone of the event’s broader message regarding sustainable practices. By aligning government regulatory bodies with specialized vocational education, the initiative positions Abu Dhabi as a leading regional hub for environmental protection and a global model for applied nature conservation.
