Nvidia $3.5 billion deal boosts MediaTek shares 10%

MediaTek Shares Surge 10% Following Strategic $3.5 Billion Investment from Nvidia

Shares of Taiwanese semiconductor giant MediaTek soared 10% on Tuesday, extending a remarkable rally that has seen the company’s stock price climb nearly 200% so far this year. The market’s enthusiastic response follows Monday’s announcement of a major strategic partnership with Nvidia, signaling a significant shift in MediaTek’s long-term business strategy.

As part of the collaboration, Nvidia has invested $3.5 billion into MediaTek through the purchase of convertible bonds. The deal serves as a cornerstone for MediaTek’s aggressive expansion into the high-growth data center market, moving beyond its traditional dominance in the mobile handset industry.

Diversifying Beyond Mobile

MediaTek has long held the title of the world’s largest smartphone chip manufacturer by market share, serving as a primary competitor to U.S.-based Qualcomm. However, in an effort to diversify its revenue streams, the company has increasingly focused on designing custom silicon for data centers—a sector currently dominated by industry heavyweights like Broadcom.

As “hyperscalers”—large-scale cloud providers and tech giants—look to build bespoke chips tailored to their specific AI workloads, MediaTek is positioning itself as a vital manufacturing and design partner. In June, the company projected its custom AI chip business would generate $2 billion in revenue this year, with a total addressable market potential of up to $80 billion by 2027.

Integrating the Nvidia Ecosystem

The partnership centers on MediaTek’s implementation of Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion platform. By integrating this technology, the custom chips developed by MediaTek can seamlessly interact with Nvidia’s broader AI infrastructure. This move is strategic for both parties: it allows MediaTek to offer a premium, high-performance product, while ensuring Nvidia remains the central nervous system of AI development even as clients pivot toward using their own proprietary hardware.

Beyond data centers, the two firms plan to collaborate on “local AI computing,” specifically targeting the development of advanced chips for personal computers and automotive systems.

A High-Stakes Alliance

The alignment of these two industry leaders was publicly highlighted during a keynote address at Computex 2025 in Taipei, where Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang lauded MediaTek as “one of the world’s great semiconductor companies.”

The move marks a critical juncture for both firms as the race for AI dominance intensifies. While analysts continue to evaluate the long-term impact on financial performance, the market’s reaction underscores the high stakes of the data center market and the growing necessity for hardware providers to form deep, synergistic alliances.

MediaTek has not yet confirmed whether the new investment from Nvidia will alter its existing revenue guidance for the coming fiscal years.
