Escalating Tensions: Iranian Officials Report Civilian Casualties in Deadly US Airstrike

TEHRAN — Tensions in the Middle East reached a dangerous new peak on Wednesday following reports that a United States military operation struck a residential area in the southern Iranian county of Sirik, resulting in multiple civilian deaths during a wedding celebration.

Iranian officials have condemned the operation, which reportedly targeted a home in the city of Kuhestak, as a “brutal” act of aggression. Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed the incident, stating that at least five individuals—including a child—were killed when the projectile impacted the gathering.

Reza Shahidiyan, the governor of Sirik County, provided a grim update to the IRIB state broadcaster, noting that the blast left 63 people wounded, a large majority of whom were women and children. The injured were transported to medical facilities in the nearby city of Minab, where officials described their conditions as stable.

Local news outlets, including the semi-official Fars agency, shared harrowing testimony from survivors. One child, describing the moments before the destruction, reported hearing the sound of fighter jets soaring overhead shortly before the residence was leveled. “Bricks, stones, and cement hit me in the face and head,” the child recounted, emphasizing that those gathered were ordinary civilians.

The strike is the latest development in a rapidly deteriorating security environment. The United States military confirmed it had initiated a series of tactical strikes against what it identified as “Iranian military targets.” Washington stated these operations were in direct retaliation for recent attempts by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to disrupt commercial shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz—a vital global maritime chokepoint. The US operation reportedly targeted Iranian air defense installations, radar arrays, and naval assets.

Regional Contagion

The reported attack in Kuhestak follows a string of strikes across southern Iran. Baghaei, characterizing the incident as part of a “chain of atrocities,” pointed to previous reports of US military engagements in the cities of Minab and Lamerd. According to Iranian officials, these prior strikes resulted in significant casualties, including an alleged attack on an elementary school in Minab that resulted in over 150 deaths, and a strike on a sports facility in Lamerd that claimed at least 21 lives.

Additional explosions were reported throughout the day in Konarak, Bandar Abbas, and Qeshm Island, signaling a widening theater of conflict. In response to the bombardment, Iranian military forces launched a series of retaliatory strikes against American military facilities and bases stationed in Jordan, Bahrain, and Iraq. The regional spillover reached Kuwait as well, where local authorities reported intercepting drones linked to the escalating hostilities.
