Preity Zinta Weighs In on Bollywood’s Work-Life Balance Debate After Deepika Padukone Controversy
The conversation surrounding grueling work schedules in the Indian film industry has been reignited, with veteran actor Preity Zinta providing a nuanced perspective on the matter. During the trailer launch of her upcoming film Vibe, the actress reflected on the realities of high-intensity film production, revealing that she, too, has endured 18-hour workdays throughout her illustrious career.
A Matter of Personal Priorities
Addressing the intensity of modern shoot schedules, Zinta emphasized that individual motivations play a significant role in how professionals manage their time. She noted that while such demanding shifts are undoubtedly “tough,” her own willingness to push through them was driven by a clear personal objective: returning to her family.
“Each to its own,” Zinta stated at the event. “I was working for 18 hours because I wanted to finish my work as soon as I could and go back to America to be with my kids. My focus was, ‘I will come, I will finish it, just let me get my work done quickly.’ That was my reason.”
The Spark Behind the Debate
The discourse on workplace expectations in Bollywood reached a boiling point following reports regarding Deepika Padukone’s exit from the Sandeep Reddy Vanga-directed project, Spirit. Industry reports suggested that the actress, who recently embraced motherhood, had requested an eight-hour workday—a request that reportedly conflicted with the production requirements of the Prabhas-starrer.
Padukone, who has largely maintained a stoic approach to public scrutiny, previously addressed the challenges of navigating industry pressures. Speaking to CNBC-TV18, she reflected on her career-long experience with systemic hurdles, noting, “I have done this at many levels; this is not new to me. I am someone who has always fought my battles silently. Sometimes they become public, which is not the way I know… but fighting my battles silently and in a dignified way is the way I know.”
Focusing on ‘Vibe’
Amid the ongoing industry dialogue, Zinta is gearing up for the release of Vibe, a thriller that explores the complexities of friendship under pressure. The film centers on two close friends whose lives are thrown into disarray, forcing them to rely on their survival instincts.
Written and directed by Kunal Kemmu, the project also stars Kemmu, Sparsh Shrivastava, and debutant Vanshika Dhir. Produced by Kemmu and Chirag Nihalani under the banner of Drongo Films, Vibe is an Amazon MGM Studios production and is slated for a theatrical release on September 18.
As the debate continues to unfold, Zinta’s comments serve as a reminder of the delicate balance stars often navigate between their professional commitments and their personal lives, highlighting that behind the glamour, the industry’s rigid demands remain a constant challenge for many.
